Living with Machines is the largest digital humanities project ever funded in the UK. The project brought together a team of twenty-three researchers to leverage more than twenty-years' worth of digitisation projects in order to deepen our understanding of the impact of mechanisation on nineteenth-century Britain. In contrast to many previous digital humanities projects which have sought to create resources, the project was concerned to work with what was already there, which whilst straightforward in theory is complex in practice. This Element describes the efforts to do so. It outlines the challenges of establishing and managing a truly multidisciplinary digital humanities project in the complex landscape of cultural data in the UK and share what other projects seeking to undertake digital history projects can learn from the experience. Oftentimes exhibitions tack on access once the artwork has already been executed and ready to be installed in the museum or gallery. But what if the artists were to ponder access as an integral and critical part of their artwork? Can access be creative and experimental? And furthermore, can the curator also fold access into their practice, while working collaboratively with artists, considering it as a theoretical and practical generative force that seeks to make an exhibition more engaging for a wider diversity of audiences? This volume includes essays by a growing number of artists, curators, and scholars who ponder these ideas of ad-hoc, experimental and underground approaches within exhibition-making and artistic practices. It considers how, through these nascent exhibition models and art practices, enhanced experiences of access in the museum can be a shared responsibility amongst museum workers, curators, and artists, in tandem with the public, so that access becomes a zone of intellectual and creative "accommodation, " rather than strictly a discourse on policy. The book provides innovative case studies which provide a template for how access might be implemented by individuals, artists, curators, museum administrators and educators given the growing need to offer as many modalities of access as possible within cultural institutions. This book shows that anyone can be a curator of access and demonstrates how to approach access in a way that goes beyond protocol and policy. "Fondées en Algérie pendant la présence française, ces sociétés savantes sont encore dans l'ombre. Au terme d'une guerre violente et fratricide, l'histoire se porta sur les aberrations de la politique coloniale de la France. Les progrès réalisés au cours du siècle précédant l'indépendance restent en grande partie ignorés. En parallèle du patrimoine matériel français, l'Algérie reçut un legs intellectuel considérable. Devenue département français au lendemain de la conquête, la Régence d'Alger et ses territoires du sud étaient peu connus. Civils et militaires entreprirent alors d'en étudier la géographie, l'histoire, d'en améliorer l'état sanitaire et d'en structurer l'agriculture. Des sociétés savantes furent ainsi fondées dès 1845. Identiques à celles de la métropole, leur action s'étendait cependant sur de plus grands espaces. Dans l'urgence de mettre fin à l'état de misère du pays, elles avaient pour tâches d'administrer, éduquer, soigner, fonder une économie moderne. What is the role of the humanities at the start of 21st century? "Der 1815 gegründete Deutsche Bund gilt noch immer weithin bloß als Instrument der Restauration überholter politischer, gesellschaftlicher und wirtschaftlicher Zustände und der Unterdrückung der politischen Opposition. Die Studie analysiert erstmals systematisch die Tätigkeit der Deutschen Bundesversammlung als dem zentralen politischen Organ des Deutschen Bundes und der durch sie eingesetzten Ausschüsse und Kommissionen in der Zeit vom Zusammentritt der Bundesversammlung 1816 bis zum Ausbruch der Revolution von 1848/49. Dabei zeigt sich, dass der Deutsche Bund keineswegs nur ein Werkzeug der Bundesstaaten zur politischen Repression und zur militärischen Verteidigung war. Vielmehr entwickelte er sich zu einer eigenen politischen Handlungsebene, die auf vielen Feldern der zivilen Rechtsvereinheitlichung, der ökonomischen Modernisierung, der kulturellen Entwicklung und der nationalen Integration und politischen Partizipation eigene Initiativen entfaltete. What would it take to hack a human? How exploitable are we? In the cybersecurity industry, professionals know that the weakest component of any system sits between the chair and the keyboard. This book looks to speculative fiction, cyberpunk and the digital humanities to bring a human - and humanistic - perspective to the issue of cybersecurity. It argues that through these stories we are able to predict the future political, cultural, and social realities emerging from technological change. Making the case for a security-minded humanities education, this book examines pressing issues of data security, privacy, social engineering and more, illustrating how the humanities offer the critical, technical, and ethical insights needed to oppose the normalization of surveillance, disinformation, and coercion. Within this counter-cultural approach to technology, this book offers a model of activism to intervene and meaningfully resist government and corporate oversight online. In doing so, it argues for a wider notion of literacy, which includes the ability to write and fight the computer code that shapes our lives.
