This book is based on research on the rigorous proof of chaos and bifurcations in 2-D quadratic maps, especially the invertible case such as the Henon map, and in 3-D ODE's, especially piecewise linear systems such as the Chua's circuit. In addition, the book covers some recent works in the field of general 2-D quadratic maps, especially their classification into equivalence classes, and finding regions for chaos, hyperchaos, and non-chaos in the space of bifurcation parameters.Following the main introduction to the rigorous tools used to prove chaos and bifurcations in the two representative systems, is the study of the invertible case of the 2-D quadratic map, where previous works are oriented toward Henon mapping. 2-D quadratic maps are then classified into 30 maps with well-known formulas. Two proofs on the regions for chaos, hyperchaos, and non-chaos in the space of the bifurcation parameters are presented using a technique based on the second-derivative test and bounds for Lyapunov exponents. Also included is the proof of chaos in the piecewise linear Chua's system using two methods, the first of which is based on the construction of Poincare map, and the second is based on a computer-assisted proof. Finally, a rigorous analysis is provided on the bifurcational phenomena in the piecewise linear Chua's system using both an analytical 2-D mapping and a 1-D approximated Poincare mapping in addition to other analytical methods.

Given a prime $p$, a group is called residually $p$ if the intersection of its $p$-power index normal subgroups is trivial. A group is called virtually residually $p$ if it has a finite index subgroup which is residually $p$. It is well-known that finitely generated linear groups over fields of characteristic zero are virtually residually $p$ for all but finitely many $p$. In particular, fundamental groups of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are virtually residually $p$. It is also well-known that fundamental groups of $3$-manifolds are residually finite. In this paper the authors prove a common generalisation of these results: every $3$-manifold group is virtually residually $p$ for all but finitely many $p$. This gives evidence for the conjecture (Thurston) that fundamental groups of $3$-manifolds are linear groups.

First-passage percolation (FPP) is a fundamental model in probability theory that has a wide range of applications to other scientific areas (growth and infection in biology, optimization in computer science, disordered media in physics), as well as other areas of mathematics, including analysis and geometry. FPP was introduced in the 1960s as a random metric space. Although it is simple to define, and despite years of work by leading researchers, many of its central problems remain unsolved.In this book, the authors describe the main results of FPP, with two purposes in mind. First, they give self-contained proofs of seminal results obtained until the 1990s on limit shapes and geodesics. Second, they discuss recent perspectives and directions including (1) tools from metric geometry, (2) applications of concentration of measure, and (3) related growth and competition models. A longstanding problem in Gabor theory is to identify time-frequency shifting lattices $a\mathbb{Z}\times b\mathbb{Z}$ and ideal window functions $\chi_I$ on intervals $I$ of length $c$ such that $\{e^{-2\pi i n bt} \chi_I(t- m a):\ (m, n)\in \mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}\}$ are Gabor frames for the space of all square-integrable functions on the real line. In this paper, the authors create a time-domain approach for Gabor frames, introduce novel techniques involving invariant sets of non-contractive and non-measure-preserving transformations on the line, and provide a complete answer to the above $abc$-problem for Gabor systems.

The primary purpose of this book is to help the reader understand what is going on in Fourier Transform (FT) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Modern life is now very largely life with "black boxes" that carry warning labels: "No user-servicable parts inside". Many find black boxes to be quite acceptable, at least as long as they work. But how willing should we be to accept black-box analyses without some understanding of how those analyses were obtained? NMR spectrometers are like "black boxes" in that they offer many standardized procedures without understanding how and why the proper parameter choices are critical. The scope of this book is broad rather than deep with the intention of providing helpful insight. Much can be understood in a more qualitative way and that is the approach taken here. For those areas where a quantitative approach is needed, simple mathematics will usually suffice.

Anick spaces are closely connected with both EHP sequences and the study of torsion exponents. In addition they refine the secondary suspension and enter unstable periodicity. This work describes their $H$-space properties as well as universal properties. Techniques include a new kind on Whitehead product defined for maps out of co-H spaces, calculations in an additive category that lies between the unstable category and the stable category, and a controlled version of the extension theorem of Gray and Theriault (Geom. The aim of this book is to present a modern treatment of the theory of theta functions in the context of algebraic geometry. The novelty of its approach lies in the systematic use of the Fourier-Mukai transform. The author starts by discussing the classical theory of theta functions from the point of view of the representation theory of the Heisenberg group (in which the usual Fourier transform plays the prominent role). He then shows that in the algebraic approach to this theory, the Fourier-Mukai transform can often be used to simplify the existing proofs or to provide completely new proofs of many important theorems. Graduate students and researchers with strong interest in algebraic geometry will find much of interest in this volume.

Reciprocity laws of various kinds play a central role in number theory. In the easiest case, one obtains a transparent formulation by means of roots of unity, which are special values of exponential functions. A similar theory can be developed for special values of elliptic or elliptic modular functions, and is called complex multiplication of such functions. In 1900, Hilbert proposed the generalization of these as the twelfth of his famous problems. In this book, Goro Shimura provides the most comprehensive generalizations of this type by stating several reciprocity laws in terms of abelian varieties, theta functions, and modular functions of several variables, including Siegel modular functions. This subject is closely connected with the zeta function of an abelian variety, which is also covered as a main theme in the book. The third topic explored by Shimura is the various algebraic relations among the periods of abelian integrals. The investigation of such algebraicity is relatively new, but has attracted the interest of increasingly many researchers. Many of the topics discussed in this book have not been covered before. In particular, this is the first book in which the topics of various algebraic relations among the periods of abelian integrals, as well as the special values of theta and Siegel modular functions, are treated extensively.
