- Godman, Arthur.
- Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 1985.
- Description
- Book — 256 p. : ill. (col.) ; 19 cm.
- Summary
-
These are the latest publications in this series of small format handbooks which offer something completely new in works of reference. They combine the usefulness of a dictionary (straightforward succinct definitions) with the flexibility of a thesaurus (entries grouped by topic and cross-referenced). They will be useful in finding the meaning of a word, finding related words, revising a particular subject area, finding out more about a word whose meaning is unknown and finding a word to fit a meaning. There are detailed annotations, useful reference tables, a glossary, a systematic scheme of cross-referencing and a comprehensive index.

- Description
- Book — xii, 516 p. : ill., ports. ; 25 cm.
- Summary
-
In this volume 35 famous chemists, including 18 Nobel laureates, tell about their lives in science, the beginnings of their careers, their aspirations, and their hardships and triumphs. The reader will learn about their seminal discoveries, and the conversations in the book bring out the humanity of these great scientists. NMR spectroscopy, computational chemistry, the drama of buckminsterfullerene, the story of the Pill, the politics of atmospheric chemistry and the resonance theory, the beginnings of molecular mechanics and modern stereochemistry are examples of the topics discussed first-hand.

76. Chemistry : fundamentals and applications [2002]
- Hameka, Hendrik F.
- San Diego : Harcourt Academic Press, c2002.
- Description
- Book — xii, 328 p. : ill. ; 27 cm.
- Summary
-
With complete coverage of the great ideas of chemistry, this textbook should be ideal for all non-scientists undergraduates wanting to learn more about chemistry. This text is suitable for non-science oriented students with some insight into problem solving in chemistry. Most chemistry books are intimidating, and they discourage the layperson with pages full of equations, graphs and procedures. This book provides direct, relatively brief, and fundamental coverage of the big ideas of chemistry as presented by a senior scientist.

- Brady, James E., 1938-
- 5th ed. - Hoboken, NJ : John Wiley & Sons, c2009.
- Description
- Book — 1 v. (various pagings) : col. ill. ; 29 cm.
- Summary
-
The image on the front cover depicts a carbon nanotube emerging from a glowing plasma of hydrogen and carbon, as it forms around particles of a metal catalyst. Carbon nanotubes are a recently discovered allotrope of carbon. Three other allotropes of carbon-buckyballs, graphite, and diamond-are illustrated at the left, as is the molecule methane, CH4, from which nanotubes and buckyballs can be made. The element carbon forms an amazing number of compounds with structures that follow from simple methane, found in natural gas, to the complex macromolecules that serve as the basis of life on our planet. The study of chemistry also follows from the simple to the more complex, and the strength of this text is that it enables students with varied backgrounds to proceed together to significant levels of achievement.

- 4th ed. - Hoboken, NJ : J. Wiley, c2004.
- Description
- Book — xxvii, 1136, [69] p. : ill. (some col.) ; 29 cm.
- Summary
-
The student-friendly style of the book makes the content accessible without sacrificing either breadth or depth of coverage. The text's informal writing style, emphasis on problem solving, and state-of-the-art media package make this book an ideal fit at schools with large class sizes and a wide range of student abilities and backgrounds. The authors' goal was to create a complete package (text + media + supplements) which would challenge the better-prepared students and provide support to the lesser prepared students, giving ALL students a chance to succeed. 4e welcomes a new co-author Fred Senese, Frostburg State University, the creator of the award-winning General Chemistry Online and Ask Antoine (the most hit general chem web resource in the world with over 15 million hits/year). In addition to creating the new Brady/Senese website, he has also worked with Jim Brady to do significant revisions in the text.

- Summary
-
This book helps you promote a spirit of scientific discovery. New scientific discoveries do not usually begin with models; they begin with data and a spirit of intellectual curiosity. In much the same way, Spencer, Bodner, and Rickard's "Chemistry: Structure and Dynamics, Third Edition" presents data, and challenges students to derive the models. Built on the recommendations of the American Chemical Society's "Task Force on the General Chemistry Curriculum", this innovative approach helps students get a feel for how chemists approach problems in the real world. This Third Edition is now revised with a new chapter on materials science and increased coverage of nuclear chemistry. Here's how it works: Data-driven approach - unlike traditional books that present theory, questions, and then applications, this text starts with the data and derives the theory from it. Students start with observations, just like scientists; concise, flexible format - the text is briefer than most current general chemistry texts (Coverage focuses on the core topics of general chemistry, with optional coverage of special topics also available); and, an emphasis on core themes - these themes include the process of science, the relationship between molecular structure and physical/chemical properties, and the relationship between the microscopic and macroscopic levels. Also available "Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry, Third Edition" By Richard S. Moog and John J. Farrell. Using a classroom-guided inquiry approach, this ideal accompaniment to "Chemistry: Structure and Dynamics" features 62 ChemActivities covering all the core general chemistry topics. These ChemActivities provide a variety of ways to promote a student-focused, active classroom.
