- Summary

- Summary

This volume brings together over 1,000 years of Persian Islamic pottery. With more than 500 illustrations, technical treatises, and commentary, Ceramics of Iran assembles a collection of rarely seen treasures from the Persian world and presents a collective history of its ceramic tradition. Included among its catalogue entries are translations of the objects' inscriptions, providing readers with an understanding of the cultural heritage from which these items are derived. In addition, the book contains new research and material from previously unknown sites. Featuring all new photography of nearly 250 objects, Ceramics of Iran brings the contributions of Persian art into a wider historical context, along with a wealth of images to demonstrate the full scope of its intricate beauty.

- Gasparini, Mariachiara, author.
- Honolulu : University Of Hawai'i Press, [2020]
- Description
- Book — xvii, 249 pages, 8 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations (some color) ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
In Transcending Patterns: Silk Road Cultural and Artistic Interactions through Central Asian Textiles, Mariachiara Gasparini investigates the origin and effects of a textile-mediated visual culture that developed at the heart of the Silk Road between the seventh and fourteenth centuries. Through the analysis of the Turfan Textile Collection in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin and more than a thousand textiles held in collections worldwide, Gasparini discloses and reconstructs the rich cultural entanglements along the Silk Road, between the coming of Islam and the rise of the Mongol Empire, from the Tarim to Mediterranean Basin. Exploring in detail the iconographic transfer between different agents and different media from Central Asian caves to South Italian churches, the author depicts and describes the movement and exchange of portable objects such as sculpture, wall painting, and silk fragments across the Asian continent and across the ages. Gasparini's history offers critical perspectives that extend far beyond an outmoded notion of "Silk Road studies." Her cross-media work shows readers how certain material cultures are connected not only by the physical routes they take but also because of the meanings and interpretations these objects engage in various places. Transcending Patterns is at once art history, material and visual cultural history, Asian studies, conservatory studies, and linguistics.

28. Tudor textiles [2020]
- Lynn, Eleri, author.
- New Haven : Yale University Press in association with Historic Royal Palaces, 2020
- Description
- Book — xiv, 192 pages : illustrations (chiefly colour) ; 28 cm
- Summary
-
A detailed study of Tudor textiles, highlighting their extravagant beauty and their impact on the royal court, fashion, and taste At the Tudor Court, textiles were ubiquitous in decor and ceremony. Tapestries, embroideries, carpets, and hangings were more highly esteemed than paintings and other forms of decorative art. Indeed, in 16th-century Europe, fine textiles were so costly that they were out of reach for average citizens, and even for many nobles. This spectacularly illustrated book tells the story of textiles during the long Tudor century, from the ascendance of Henry VII in 1485 to the death of his granddaughter Elizabeth I in 1603. It places elaborate tapestries, imported carpets, lavish embroidery, and more within the context of religious and political upheavals of the Tudor court, as well as the expanding world of global trade, including previously unstudied encounters between the New World and the Elizabethan court. Special attention is paid to the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a magnificent two-week festival-and unsurpassed display of golden textiles-held in 1520. Even half a millennium later, such extraordinary works remain Tudor society's strongest projection of wealth, taste, and ultimately power.

31. 100 ideas that changed design [2019]
- Fiell, Charlotte, 1965- author.
- London : Laurence King Publishing, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 216 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 22 cm
- Summary
-
This inspiring book chronicles the most influential ideas that have shaped industrial and product design. Written by two experts on modern design, it provides both a concise history of the subject, and offers a fascinating resource to dip into for the general reader. From the origins or modern design in the craft movements of the 19th and early 20th century and the changes brought about by mass production, the book traces the most important ideas in design through the modern movement and post-war consumer society to more recent ideas such as Open-Source Design and Biomimicry. Arranged in a broadly chronological order, the ideas are presented through fascinating text and arresting visuals, 100 Ideas that Changed Design explores when each idea first evolved and the subsequent impact it has had up to the present day.

32. 100 whites [2019]
- Hara, Ken'ya, 1958- author.
- Zurich, Switzerland : Lars Müller Publishers, [2019]
- Description
- Book — iii, 204 pages, 4 unnumbered pages of plates (folded) : illustrations ; 20 cm
- Summary
-
White not only plays an important role in Japanese culture in general but also in the work of designer Kenya Hara. In 100 Whites, Hara gives one hundred specific examples of white-such as snow, Iceland, rice, and wax. On the basis of these examples he discusses the importance of white in design-not only as a color but as a philosophy. Hara describes how he experiments with the different whites he mentions, what they mean in the process of his work, and how they influence design today. 100 Whites is the extension of his previously published book White. The new publication explores the essence of white, which Hara sees as symbolizing simplicity and subtlety.

- Grünberger, Christoph, author.
- Zürich, Switzerland : Lars Müller Publishers, [2019]
- Description
- Book — 303 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
This book is a tool kit to create new forms. It deals with grid-based design and gives the reader techniques to develop new forms, fonts, logos, and patterns. The concept represents a design process in which individual decisions follow much larger and deeper principles than immediate and spontaneous-intuitive actions. Using a wide variety of examples, each chapter contains a detailed description of the procedure from form analysis to setting up design rules and their application. Both a workbook and a source of inspiration, this publication provides designers and architects with the tool they need to find analytical forms-analog, algorithm-based, exploratory but never of arbitrary origin. The procedures described allow an almost infinite number of possibilities. The designer is thus transformed from inventor to interpreter or curator, who assesses individual forms for logos, fonts or patterns on the fly and ensures that the design process is always efficient and goal-oriented.

- Schwartzman, Arnold, author, photographer.
- New York : Rizzoli, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 224 pages : chiefly color illustrations ; 30 cm
- Summary
-
Arnold Schwartzman's stunning photographs of the finest examples of Art Deco from all over the world are collected here as a celebration of one of the world's most popular decorative styles. Art deco is the 20th century's most glamorous architectural style, and the one that shaped popular ideas of modern luxury. With over 200 photographs, this is a visual celebration of this very popular style. Unlike most other books on the subject that tend to be regionally specific, this book highlights Art Deco buildings from all over the world, from Australia to South America, with an emphasis on London, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, and Paris. Art Deco features much careful and exacting detail, and of special interest in this book are photos that zoom in on murals, mosaics, flooring, ironwork, and other ornamental flourishes. Art Deco began in 1925 and quickly swept the globe becoming the style epitomizing Jazz Age glamor and sophistication. It drew from a variety of influences including ancient Egyptian, Moorish, and Mayan motifs but also modernist movements like Cubism, Fauvism, and De Stijl. Its influence was felt everywhere, from the skylines of New York to Shanghai, and it gained prominence not only with architects and designers but enjoyed a passionate following among the public as well.

60. Charlotte Perriand [2019]
- Adler, Laure, author.
- Paris : Gallimard, [2019]
- Description
- Book — 272 pages : illustrations, portrait ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"Design, architecture, photographie...

61. A colorful life : Gere Kavanaugh, designer [2019]
- Sandhaus, Louise, 1955- author.
- New York : Princeton Architectural Press, [2019]
- Description
- Book — 217 pages : chiefly illustrations (chiefly color) ; 27 cm
- Summary
-
The designer Gere Kavanaugh is an irrepressible force of nature who epitomized the craft and folk vibe of the '60s and '70s California design scene and remains a larger-than-life personality today. Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Kavanaugh became in 1952 only the third woman to earn a degree in Cranbrook Academy of Art's design program. After successful stints as one of GM's so-called Damsels of Design and as director of interiors for Victor Gruen's architecture and planning firm, she opened Gere Kavanaugh/Designs. There, Kavanaugh put her unique stamp on textiles, furniture, toys, graphics, store and restaurant interiors, holiday decor, housewares, and public art-even designing and curating exhibitions. But perhaps her most enduring project has been the joyful, open-ended, ongoing experiment of her own lifestyle and homes, a dream of color and handcraft. Kavanaugh was awarded the AIGA Medal in 2016, recognizing her "prodigious and polymathic approach to design.".

62. Contemporary jewellery in Portugal : from the avant-garde of the 1960's to the early 21st century [2019]
- Filipe, Cristina, author.
- Stuttgart, Germany : Arnoldsche Art Publishers, [2019]
- Description
- Book — x, 407 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), portraits ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
In this book, Cristina Filipe offers a critical examination, from a social and art historical perspective, of some of the artists and contexts that contributed to the transformations in Portuguese jewellery from the vanguard of the 1960s to the early twenty-first century - a decisive period in which the term 'jewellery' itself was redefined. In addition, Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal contextualises the international scene, reflecting on how Portuguese artists responded to these external influences. What jewellery was made? Who made it? What were the underlying trends and creative references? These are some of the questions that this book seeks to answer through the analysis of artist interviews and exhaustive factual research, accompanied by a visual narrative mirroring the changes in contemporary jewellery in Portugal.

64. Daniel Brush : jewels sculpture [2019]
- Brush, Daniel, artist.
- New York, NY : Rizzoli Electa, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 255 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 31 cm
- Summary
-
A unique figure in the world of contemporary art, Daniel Brush is in equal measure artist and craftsman. Over the course of forty years, Brush has created an unparalleled body of work, whose scope ranges from large-scale abstract drawings to sculptures in steel, aluminum, and gold. Collected here are more than 150 objects that bring to the fore Brush s astonishing work with jewels. Far from the products of the world of commercial jewelry, these are jewel-encrusted objects of virtue and fantasy that reflect not just the artist s rigorous personal aesthetic and mastery of technique, but his lifelong fascinations with philosophy and Asian thought, and his exhaustive knowledge of the history of precious stones. With photography made of the objects in situ inside Brush s studio in New York City, this book presents not only a catalog of his jewel work to date, but also an ethereal portrait of the artist himself. Housed in a slipcase, with photographs by Takaaki Matsumoto and an illuminating text by Vivienne Becker, this is an intimate study of the work of a master artist and a beautiful object in itself.

66. Decoding the Bayeux tapestry : the secrets of history's most faimous embroidery hidden in plan sight [2019]
- Wright, A. C. (Arthur C.), 1947- author.
- Barnsley, England : Frontline Books, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 175 pages : color illustrations, color maps ; 26 cm
- Summary
-
The story of the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings as shown in the Bayeux Tapestry is arguably the most widely-known in the entire panoply of English history, and over the last 200 years there have been hundreds of books portraying the Tapestry and seeking to analyse its meanings. Yet, there is one aspect of the embroidery that has been virtually ignored or dismissed as unimportant by historians - the details in the margins. Yet the fables shown in the margins are not just part of a decorative ribbon, neither are they discontinuous, but in fact follow-on in sequence. When this is understood, it becomes clear that they must relate in some way to the action shown on the body of the Tapestry. After careful examination, it has become clear that the purpose of these images is to amplify, elaborate or explain the main story. In this ground-breaking study, Arthur Wright reveals for the first time the significance of the images in the margins. This has meant that it is possible to see the 'whole' story as never before, enabling a more complete picture of the Bayeux Tapestry to be constructed. This, in turn, has led to the author re-examining many of the scenes in the main body of the work, showing that a number of the basic assumptions, so often taught as facts, have been based on nothing more than reasoned conjecture. It might be thought that after so much has been written about the Bayeux Tapestry there was nothing more to be said, but Decoding the Bayeux Tapestry shows us just how much there is still to be learnt.

71. Design, technology, empathy : a contemporary issue in the conception and production of artifacts [2019]
- Essays. Selections
- Paris, Spartaco, 1973- author.
- Champaign, IL : Common Ground Research Networks, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 145 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm.
- Summary
-
"Just as was the case in other phases of history - including, but not limited to pre-modern history - today's finishes in architecture and in our habitat are characterised by figures and spaces, rather than forms, increasingly moving away from abstraction. The recurrent and once again customary presence of figures, natural references, small or large-sized ornaments and decorations, calls for a reflection on this phenomenology; this ranges from a detail in texture to the finishing elements in our interiors, to the surfaces which attribute expressive features to contemporary buildings, in a sort of new - unconscious?- reference to a materialist and naturalistic matrix in relation to the look of artifacts. This condition seemed prevalent from, for example, a walk through the grounds at the last Expo: a touch of experimentalism in the expressive display of shapes and figures inspired by nature or biophysics. This is an easy tool to 'shock the bourgeoisie': from trees of life, foliage and/or stylized woods covering pavilions/boxes, to simplified naturalistic intrusions, the character of the array of decor for our habitat - from public spaces to homes - investigates a wide range of figures mimicking nature. The texts are organised into homogeneous thematic clusters, collecting reflections and short essays, with some bibliographic annotations for each topic. The central thread connecting the text is a critical approach - in positive terms - to the relation between technology, design concept and the production of forms of artifacts"-- Provided by publisher.

- Summary
-
Diamond jewelry has long been symbolic of political power and authority in Europe. This book focuses on the individuals who commissioned and wore extraordinarily precious diamond ornaments from the mid-14th century until the 'democratization' of diamonds that followed the opening of mines in South Africa in 1867. This enthralling story covers seven centuries of history, showing the way in which rulers such as Charles V of France, Queen Elizabeth I of Great Britain, Louis XIV of France and Catherine II of Russia used diamond jewelry to reinforce their power and authority. As works of art, these precious creations mirror the successive styles of each period - late Gothic naturalism, the culture of the Renaissance, Baroque splendour, Rococo elegance and the Imperial grandeur of the First and Second Napoleonic Empires. The recurring themes - religion, sentiment, heraldry, military glory, miniatures and cameo portraiture - are reinterpreted by each generation of jewelers. Like royal dress, diamond jewelry was worn to dazzle and impress - at weddings, coronations, christenings and state visits - and was presented as gifts reflecting princely generosity. Over the centuries, these displays proved remarkably successful as instruments of government, symbolizing the pride and glory of a nation. Arranged chronologically, Diamond Jewelry includes some legendary masterpieces of diamond jewelry. Written by an acknowledged expert, it offers an intriguing overview of one of the world's most precious gems.

Liste der Künstlerinnen & Künstler: Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Eduardo Chillida, Le Corbusier, Marc Couturier, Sonia Delaunay, Hans Hartung, François-Xavier Lalanne, Jean Messagier, François Morellet, Orlan, Alicia Penalba, Gérard Schlosser, Patrick Tosani, Victor Vasarely u. a. --Publisher's website

78. The flowering desert : textiles from Sindh [2019]
- Askari, Nasreen author.
- London : Paul Holberton Publishing ; Karachi : Mohatta Palace Museum, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 168 pages : chiefly color illustrations ; 28 cm
- Summary
-
A lavishly illustrated volume of Pakistani textiles of extraordinary colour and vibrancy from one of the most arid areas on Earth. The Flowering Desert: Textiles from Sindh focuses on a private collection of textiles from Sindh, Pakistan, which, according to some scholars, was the crucible in which the textile traditions of Gujarat and Rajasthan were forged. Sindhi textiles are unique inasmuch as they reflect a dimension that combines the harshness of the terrain with a quest for a mythical and unattainable beauty. The collection is recognised as being of outstanding merit and some of it has featured in exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. In addition to sumptuous reproductions of 120 remarkable objects the book includes contextual photographs of textiles in use.

Established in 1831, the Gorham Manufacturing Company adeptly coupled art and industry, rising to become an industry leader of stylistic and technological achievement in America and around the world. It was the only major competitor of Tiffany and Co., producing public presentation pieces and one-of-a-kind showstoppers for important occasions, as well as tableware for everyday use. Its works trace a narrative arc not only of great design but also of American ambitions. In this volume, insightful essays are accompanied by gorgeous new photography of splendid silver pieces along with a wealth of archival images, design drawings, casting patterns, and company records that reveal a rich heritage of a giant in decorative arts and silver manufacturing. Produced in collaboration with the RISD Museum, which has the world s most significant collection of Gorham silver, this major new book casts new light on more than 120 years of grand aesthetic styles in silver, innovative industrial practices, and American social and cultural norms.

91. Iterate : ten lessons in design and failure [2019]
- Sharp, John, 1967- author.
- Cambridge, Massachusetts : The MIT Press, [2019]
- Description
- Book — xiv, 299 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
How to confront, embrace, and learn from the unavoidable failures of creative practice; with case studies that range from winemaking to animation. Failure is an inevitable part of any creative practice. As game designers, John Sharp and Colleen Macklin have grappled with crises of creativity, false starts, and bad outcomes. Their tool for coping with the many varieties of failure: iteration, the cyclical process of conceptualizing, prototyping, testing, and evaluating. Sharp and Macklin have found that failure-often hidden, covered up, a source of embarrassment-is the secret ingredient of iterative creative process. In Iterate, they explain how to fail better. After laying out the four components of creative practice-intention, outcome, process, and evaluation-Sharp and Macklin describe iterative methods from a wide variety of fields. They show, for example, how Radiolab cohosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich experiment with radio as a storytelling medium; how professional skateboarder Amelia Brodka develops skateboarding tricks through trial and error; and how artistic polymath Miranda July explores human frailty through a variety of media and techniques. Whimsical illustrations tell parallel stories of iteration, as hard-working cartoon figures bake cupcakes, experiment with levitating office chairs, and think outside the box in toothbrush design ("let's add propellers!"). All, in their various ways, use iteration to transform failure into creative outcomes. With Iterate, Sharp and Macklin offer useful lessons for anyone interested in the creative process. Case Studies: Allison Tauziet, winemaker; Matthew Maloney, animator; Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, Radiolab cohosts; Wylie Dufresne, chef; Nathalie Pozzi, architect, and Eric Zimmerman, game designer; Andy Milne, jazz musician; Amelia Brodka, skateboarder; Baratunde Thurston, comedian; Cas Holman, toy designer; Miranda July, writer and filmmaker.

- Summary

This lavishly illustrated book celebrates one of the most comprehensive and meticulously assembled private collections of Chinese export porcelain from the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644) made at Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province. The Lurie Collection, comprising about one hundred seventy porcelain pieces, contains examples that are exceptional not only for their aesthetic beauty and quality, but also for their rarity or historical importance. This book makes a significant contribution to several fields of study, most notable those related to the production, design and trade of Jingdezhen export porcelain in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. An introduction places the diverse porcelains of the Lurie Collection in their historical context. It offers new insight into the European expansion to Asia in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, via both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which ultimately led to an unprecedented large-scale trade, transport and consumption of various types of Jingdezhen export porcelain throughout the world until the collapse of the Ming dynasty in 1644. The core of the book is the catalogue section, which is composed of 127 entries with comprehensive discussions and images of a selection of the Lurie porcelains. Whenever possible they are accompanied by images of excavated shards that originally formed part of similar porcelain pieces, establishing direct links to the Jingdezhen kilns where such pieces were produced. Multiple sources of evidence (textual, material and visual) shed light on the trading networks through which these Jingdezhen porcelains circulated, as well as the way in which they were acquired, used and appreciated by the different societies in Europe, the New World, Asia and the Middle East

- Description
- Book — 1 volume (various pagings) : colour illustrations ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
"I love you I hate you is a book about Johannesburg told in two parts. The first is told through design. It is the story of Love Jozi so far, a catalogue of more than 100 t-shirt graphics. We revisited our image archive from the past 15 years to narrate a tale of the city. T-shirts have always been the core product of the brand, and each range has emerged from a specific context. The book is illustrated by rich visuals which show how Johannesburg became our muse, inspiring bold designs and new ways of looking. The second part is told through a collection of short essays by contributing writers. We invited 34 Joburg thinkers, doers and observers to start a conversation with each t-shirt range. This collection spells out a complicated relationship with the city. The result explores Johannesburg in fresh ways and takes the reader down unexpected paths, grappling with a complex place that inspires competing emotions of love and hate."--Provided by publisher
