Over the past three decades, climate change and other uncertainties have wreaked havoc on diverse livelihoods in the Himalayas. Farming communities cope with these changes based on their perceptions of changing climatic patterns. This volume seeks to understand the challenges faced by the Himalayan farmers and their agricultural institutions in constantly changing external production conditions. Given that agriculture is most sensitive to climate change, the aim of this volume is to relate contemporary farming practices with projected future changes. Climate change, the contributors to the volume argue, is not the sole factor that impacts agricultural practices. Climate is only one aspect of a wide array of factors that lead to multiple kinds of uncertainties among the farming communities. The authors of the volume use the lens of flexibility to debate and discuss farmers and farming systems that are most suited to adapt to a future burdened with uncertainty. This volume takes a long view of the year 2100 and projects a course of action that best prepares farmers and farming communities to future climate changes and generalized uncertainties.

This volume holds a datelist of 882 radiocarbon determinations carried out between 1988 and 1993 on behalf of the Ancient Monuments Laboratory of English Heritage. It contains supporting information about the samples and the sites producing them, a comprehensive bibliography, and two indexes for reference and analysis. An introduction provides discussion of the character and taphonomy of the dated samples and information about the methods used for the analyses reported and their calibration. The datelist has been collated from information provided by the submitters of the samples and the dating laboratories. Many of the sites and projects from which dates have been obtained are published, although, when some of these measurements were produced, high-precision calibration was not possible for much of the radiocarbon timescale. At this time, there was also only a limited range of statistical techniques available for the analysis of radiocarbon dates. Methodological developments since these measurements were made may allow revised archaeological interpretations to be constructed on the basis of these dates, and so the purpose of this volume is to provide easy access to the raw scientific and contextual data which may be used in further research.

Until the 1970s all materials studied consisted of periodic arrays of unit cells, or were amorphous. In the last decades a new class of solid state matter, called aperiodic crystals, has been found. It is a long range ordered structure, but without lattice periodicity. It is found in a wide range of materials: organic and anorganic compounds, minerals (including a substantial portion of the earths crust), and metallic alloys, under various pressures and temperatures. Because of the lack of periodicity the usual techniques for the study of structure and physical properties no longer work, and new techniques have to be developed. This book deals with the characterisation of the structure, the structure determination and the study of the physical properties, especially dynamical and electronic properties of aperiodic crystals. The treatment is based on a description in a space with more dimensions than three, the so-called superspace. This allows us to generalise the standard crystallography and to look differently at the dynamics. The three main classes of aperiodic crystals, modulated phases, incommensurate composites and quasicrystals are treated from a unified point of view, which stresses similarities of the various systems. The book assumes as a prerequisite a knowledge of the fundamental techniques of crystallography and the theory of condensed matter, and covers the literature at the forefront of the field.
