The National Hospital Discharge Survey is part of a continuing sample of hosptial discharge records, which provide medical and demographic information used to calculate statistics on hospital utilization. The survey contains information on the patients' demographic characteristics (sex, age, date of birth, race, and marital status), dates of admission and discharge, status of discharge, procedures performed, and source of payment.

Independent research teams at five universities (Yale, Johns Hopkins, Washington University, Duke University, and UCLA), in collaboration with NIMH, conducted the studies with a core of common questions and sample characteristics. The structured psychiatric diagnostic interview used in the ECA was the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule, version III, which includes manic episode, major depressive episode, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, etc.

The Joint Commission on Mental Illness and Health sponsored a nationwide survey conducted by the Survey Research Center at The University of Michigan to assess the subjective mental health of "normal" American adults and to determine in detail how they cope with problems of ajustment. A cross-sectional sample of Americans over age 21 living in private households was interviewed. The survey focused on various areas in which problems might arise, including marriage, parenthood, employment, and general social relationships. Information about leisure time, past and present physical and mental health, and motives for affiliation, achievement, and power were also sought. Three questionnaire forms were employed, each addressed to a randomly selected third of the sample.

The National Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys collect information on all drugs/medications ordered, administered, or provided during patients' visits. The data items include the medication code, generic name and code, brand name, entry status, prescription status, federal controlled substance status, composition status, and related ingredient codes.

The survey includes information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the kinds of health services people receive. Household variables include type of living quarters, size of family, number of families in household, and geographic region. Person variables include sex, age, race, marital status, veteran status, education, income, industry and occupation codes, and limits on activity. The condition, doctor visit and hospital files contain information on each reported condition, two-week doctor visit, or hospitalization.

Nine compnents focusing on nutritional practices and physical health comprise this survey of Hispanic Americans. These are: body measurements, dental health, blood and urine assessments, physician's examination, dietary practices/food frequency, adolescent and adult history, measures of depression, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse.

The study describes the social, demographic and economic aspects of illness, disability and medical services. The residential mobility supplement contains data on where respondent lives, length of time at address, number and distance of moves, and with whom respondent lives. The health insurance supplement contains information about private insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, military and other plans, and coverage.

The National Hospital Discharge Survey provides data on the utilization of nonfederal short-stay hospitals. It is a continuous survey based on a sample of medical records of patients discharged from a national sample of these hospitals. The survey contains information on the patients' demographic characteristics (sex, date of birth, age, race, and marital status), dates of admission and discharge, discharge status, diagnoses, and surgery performed.

The second Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES II), conducted during the period 1976-1980, was designed to measure and monitor the nutritional status and health of the United States population ages 6 months through 74 years. Data were collected by means questonnaires and physical examinaton.

This data collection consists of three separate datasets. Data were collected to study the trends and changes in the frequency, magnitude, etc. of international wars, civil wars, and international disputes. The first dataset describes the experience of each interstate system member in each war. The second dataset is a study of 106 major civil wars involving 139 participants between 1816 and 1980. The third dataset describes the international disputes that occurred from 1817 through 1976.
