- Summary
-
"Artistic Dynamos: An Ethnography on Music in Central African Kingdoms uses stories and research from the Ngiemboon community of West Cameroon as touchstones for proposing new approaches to arts scholarship and community development. Building on the results of ethnographic research, artistic action is viewed through the lens of communication. This view brings a picture of increased cultural energy in the enactment of artistic genres -- melodic, rhythmic, poetic, dramatic, visual, and performative. Schrag's treatise will change how scholars across disciplines understand and engage with the arts. This volume offers methods for improved scholarship, resulting in communities living better lives. The author's website contains the video and audio recordings discussed in the book, plus full color versions of many photos and diagrams"-- Provided by publisher.

17. Duruflé's music considered [2021]
- Ebrecht, Ronald, 1953- author.
- Lanham, MD : Lexington Books, [2021]
- Description
- Book — xi, 497 pages : illustrations, music ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"In this book, Ronald Ebrecht has meticulously studied each of Duruflé’s works and put together the first book to discuss in detail all of Duruflé’s music. With encouragement from Duruflé’s editor and the foundation established in his name, Ebrecht has compiled copious examples from manuscript sources to be published for the first time along with the little-known contextualizing works of Messiaen and Barraine. Most widely known for his masterpiece Requiem, the composer’s orchestral gems are analyzed alongside his delightful miniature: the orchestration of the Sicilienne. The organ works which set the standard for virtuosity at conservatories around the world are given new insightful and thorough evaluation by Ebrecht, whose long association with late 19th and early 20th century France and French music affords illuminating connections between Duruflé and his predecessors and successors with sweeping insight and minute detail."-- Publisher's website

- Summary
-
None other than Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz has been engaged for the stage direction of the new production of Fidelio from the Theater an der Wien. There, at one of the oldest opera houses in Vienna, L.v. Beethoven was what one would call today a composer-in-residence. And he was this in two respects: here he lived for two years in an apartment in the wing of the building. And it was here that he premiered many of his most famous orchestral works, symphonies, and his only opera: Fidelio. In his third opera production Waltz brilliantly stages the second version of the opera in the breathtaking set designed by the German-American architectural practice Barkow Leibinger

- Summary
-
Sergey Prokofiev's operatic tragedy was never performed in the composer's lifetime, the music's brittle energy, drama, and eloquent lyrical tenderness would re-emerge in his Third Symphony. The narrative focuses relentlessly on Renata, who is haunted by an angel who turns out to be the devil. Director Emma Dante describes the opera as an explosive mix of fantastical realism and endless confusion of nightmares, madness, sexual impulses, and cultural clashes', and this Teatro dell Opera di Roma production was acclaimed as ₁a presentation of Prokofiev's masterpiece which sparkles in all its grotesque glory.'

24. Finding democracy in music [2021]
- London ; New York : Routledge, 2021
- Description
- Book — xi, 210 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
"For a century and more, the idea of democracy has fuelled musicians' imaginations. Seeking to go beyond music's proven capacity to contribute to specific political causes, musicians have explored how aspects of their practice embody democratic principles. This may involve adopting particular approaches to compositional material, performance practice, relationships to audiences, or modes of dissemination and distribution. Finding Democracy in Music is the first study to offer a wide-ranging investigation of ways in which democracy may thus be found in music. A guiding theme of the volume is that this takes place in a plurality of ways, depending upon the perspective taken to music's manifold relationships, and the idea of democracy being entertained. Contributing authors explore various genres including orchestral composition, jazz, the post-war avant-garde, online performance, and contemporary popular music, as well as employing a wide array of theoretical, archival, and ethnographic methodologies. Particular attention is given to the contested nature of democracy as a category, and the gaps that frequently arise between utopian aspiration and reality. In so doing, the volume interrogates a key way in which music helps to articulate and shape our social lives and our politics." -- Back cover

- Conclusion : Defining New York sabor.
"Improvising Sabor: Cuban Dance Music in New York begins in 1960s New York and examines in rich detail the playing styles and international influence of important figures in US Latin music. Such innovators as José Fajardo, Johnny Pacheco, George Castro, and Eddy Zervigón dazzled the Palladium ballroom and other Latin music venues in those crucible years. Author Sue Miller focuses on the Cuban flute style in light of its transformations in the US after the 1959 revolution and within the vibrant context of 1960s New York. While much about Latin jazz and salsa has been written, this book focuses on the relatively unexplored New York charangas that were performing during the chachachá and pachanga craze of the early sixties. Indeed, many accounts cut straight from the 1950s and the mambo to the bugalú's development in the late 1960s with little mention of the chachachá and pachanga's popularity in the mid-twentieth century. Improvising Sabor addresses not only this lost and ignored history, but contends with issues of race, class, and identity while evaluating differences in style between players from prerevolution Cuban charangas and those of 1960s New York. Through comprehensive explorations and transcriptions of numerous musical examples as well as interviews with and commentary from Latin musicians, Improvising Sabor highlights a specific sabor that is rooted in both Cuban dance music forms and the rich performance culture of Latin New York. The distinctive styles generated by these musicians sparked compelling points of departure and influence"-- Provided by publisher.

27. In concert : performing musical persona [2021]
- Auslander, Philip, 1956- author.
- Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press, 2021.
- Description
- Book — x, 293 pages : illustrations ; 23cm
- Summary
-
"The conventional way of understanding what musicians do as performers is to treat them as producers of sound; some even argue that it is unnecessary to see musicians in performance as long as one can hear them. But musical performance, counters Philip Auslander, is also a social interaction between musicians and their audiences, appealing as much to the eye as to the ear. In Concert: Performing Musical Persona he addresses not only the visual means by which musicians engage their audiences through costume and physical gesture, but also spectacular aspects of performance such as light shows. Although musicians do not usually enact fictional characters on stage, they nevertheless present themselves to audiences in ways specific to the performance situation. Auslander's term to denote the musician's presence before the audience is musical persona. While presence of a musical persona may be most obvious within rock and pop music, the book's analysis extends to classical music, jazz, blues, country, electronic music, laptop performance, and music made with experimental digital interfaces. The eclectic group of performers discussed include the Beatles, Miles Davis, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Frank Zappa, B. B. 32. Leonore [2020]
- [Franklin, Tennessee] : Naxos, [2021]
- Description
- Video — 1 videodisc (148 min.) : sound, color ; 4 3/4 in. Sound: digital.optical.stereo.PCM. Video: NTSC. Digital: video file.DVD video.all regions.
- Summary
-
Beethoven started composing Leonore in January 1804. The subject, the release to freedom of an unjustly imprisoned man by his devoted wife, was part of the genre of 'rescue operas' which were very popular at the end of the eighteenth century. The premiere of Leonore, given before an uncomprehending audience at a time of political upheaval, was a failure and Beethoven responded by shortening the work from three acts to two, which was the version performed in 1806. After further revisions, it was to emerge in 1814 as Fidelio. This performance is from Opera Lafayette's Leonore Project which included a performance of Pierre Gaveaux's Lénore, ou L'Amour conjugal.

- Summary
-
The mass is an extraordinary musical form. Whereas other Western art music genres from medieval times have fallen out of favour, the mass has not merely survived but flourished. A variety of historical forces within religious, secular, and musical arenas saw the mass expand well beyond its origins as a cycle of medieval chants, become concertised and ultimately bifurcate. Even as Western societies moved away from their Christian origins to become the religiously plural and politically secular societies of today, and the Church itself moved in favour of congregational singing, composers continued to compose masses. By the early twentieth century two forms of mass existed: the liturgical mass composed for church services, and the concert mass composed for secular venues. Spanning two millennia, The Origins and Ascendancy of the Concert Mass outlines the origins and meanings of the liturgical texts, defines the concert mass, explains how and why the split occurred, and provides examples that demonstrate composers' gradual appropriation of the genre as a vehicle for personal expression on serious issues. By the end of the twentieth century the concert mass had become a repository for an eclectic range of theological and political ideas.

48. Rebel musics. Volume 2 : human rights, resistant sounds, and the politics of music making [2021]
- Montréal ; Chicago ; London : Black Rose Books, [2021]
- Description
- Book — 275 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
"The first edition of Rebel Musics, published in 2003, sought to explore how musical activism resonates in practical and political terms, how musical resistance brings together voices that might otherwise remain silent, and how political action through music increases the potential for people to determine their own fate. If anything, these issues seem to be even more pressing today. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Black Rose Books, this second volume of Rebel Musics features a collection of new essays from artists and scholars that will continue to explore and spark debate about these vital topics in compelling ways. The book offers a fascinating journey into a rich, complex world, where music and politics unite, where rebel musicians are mobilizing for political change, resistance, and social justice. With explosive lyrics and driving rhythms, rebel musicians are helping to mobilize movements for political change and social justice, at home and around the world."-- Provided by publisher.

54. Scattered musics [2021]
- Jackson : University Press of Mississippi, [2021]
- Description
- Book — xiv, 254 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"Contributions by Nilanjana Bhattacharjya, Benjamin Burkhart, Ivy Chevers, Martha I. Chew Sánchez, Athena Elafros, William García-Medina, Sara Goek, Eyvind Kang, Junko Oba, Juan David Rubio Restrepo, and Gareth Dylan Smith In Scattered Musics, editors Martha I. Chew Sánchez and David Henderson, along with a range of authors from a variety of scholarly backgrounds, consider the musics that diaspora and migrant populations are inspired to create, how musics and musicians travel, and how they change in transit. Its authors cover a lot of ground: cumbia in Mexico, música sertaneja in Japan, hip-hop in Canada, Irish music in the US and the UK, reggae and dancehall in Germany, and more. Diasporic groups transform the musical expressions of their home countries as well as those in their host communities. The studies collected here show how these transformations are ways of grappling with ever-changing patterns of movement. Different diasporas hold their homelands in different regards. Some communities try to recreate home away from home in musical performances, while others use music to critique and redefine their senses of home. Through music, people seek to reconstruct and refine collective memory and a collective sense of place. The essays in this volume-by sociologists, historians, ethnomusicologists, and others-explore these questions in ways that are theoretically sophisticated yet readable making evident the complexities of musical and social phenomena in diaspora and migrant populations. As the opening paragraph of the introduction to the volume observes, "What remains when people have been scattered apart is a strong urge to gather together, to collect." At few times in our lives has that ever been more apparent than right now"-- Provided by publisher.

61. Vibrate higher : a rap story [2021]
- Kweli, Talib, author.
- First edition. - New York : MCD, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2021.
- Description
- Book — x, 322 pages ; 22 cm
- Summary
-
From one of the most lyrically gifted, socially conscious rappers of the past twenty years, Vibrate Higher is a firsthand account of hip-hop as a political force Before Talib Kweli became a world-renowned hip hop artist, he was a Brooklyn kid who liked to cut class, spit rhymes, and wander the streets of Greenwich Village with a motley crew of artists, rappers, and DJs who found hip hop more inspiring than their textbooks (much to the chagrin of the educator parents who had given their son an Afrocentric name in hope of securing for him a more traditional sense of pride and purpose). Kweli's was the first generation to grow up with hip hop as established culture--a genre of music that has expanded to include its own pantheon of heroes, rich history and politics, and distinct worldview. Eventually, childhood friendships turned into collaborations and Kweli gained notoriety as a rapper in his own right. From collaborating with some of hip hop's greatest--including Mos Def, Common, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Kendrick Lamar--to selling books out of the oldest African-American bookstore in Brooklyn, and ultimately leaving his record label and taking control of his own recording career, Kweli tells the winding, always compelling story of the people and events that shaped his own life as well as the culture of hip hop which informs American culture at large. Vibrate Higher illuminates Talib Kweli's upbringing and artistic success, but so too does it give life to hip hop as a political force--one that galvanized the Movement for Black Lives, and serves a continual channel for resistance against the rising tide of white nation.

- Snedden, Andrew John, author.
- Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2021.
- Description
- Book — xiv, 255 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
"Historically Informed Performance, or HIP, has become an influential and exciting development for scholars, musicians, and audiences alike. Yet it has not been unchallenged, with debate over the desirability of its central goals and the accuracy of its results. The author suggests ways out of this impasse in Romantic performance style. In this wide-ranging study, pianist and scholar Andrew John Snedden takes a step back, examining the strengths and limitations of HIP. He proposes that many problems are avoided when performance styles are understood as expressions of their cultural era rather than as simply composer intention, explaining not merely how we play, but why we play the way we do, and why the nineteenth century Romantics played very differently. Snedden examines the principal evidence we have for Romantic performance style, especially in translation of score indications and analysis of early recordings, finally focusing on the performance styles of Liszt and Chopin. He concludes with a call for the reanimation of culturally appropriate performance styles in Romantic repertoire. This study will be of great interest to scholars, performers, and students, to anyone wondering about how our performances reflect our culture, and about how the Romantics played their own culturally-embedded music"-- Provided by publisher.

90. Anthem : Rush in the '70s [2020]
- Popoff, Martin, 1963- author.
- Toronto, Ontario, Canada : ECW Press, [2020]
- Description
- Book — 354 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
"The definitive biography of the rock 'n' roll kings of the North. With extensive, first-hand reflections from Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart, as well as from family, friends, and fellow musicians, Anthem: Rush in the '70s is a detailed portrait of Canada's greatest rock ambassadors. The first of three volumes, Anthem puts the band's catalog, from their self-titled debut to 1978's Hemispheres (the next volume resumes with the release of Permanent Waves) into both Canadian and general pop culture context, and presents the trio of quintessentially dependable, courteous Canucks as generators of incendiary, groundbreaking rock 'n' roll. Fighting complacency, provoking thought, and often enraging critics, Rush has been at war with the music industry since 1974, when they were first dismissed as the Led Zeppelin of the north. Anthem, like each volume in this series, celebrates the perseverance of Geddy, Alex, and Neil: three men who maintained their values while operating from a Canadian base, throughout lean years, personal tragedies, and the band's eventual worldwide success."--Provided by publisher
