Guria Sansthan is a non-profit organization in India that works with socially and economically marginalized women musicians and dancers to prevent their sexual exploitation. Many of these women are descendants of tawaifs, who served as courtesans of the upper classes. Tawaifs were knowledgeable in North Indian forms of song, dance and poetry. Today, the term tawaif is almost synonymous in the Urdu language for prostitute.
