The 2001 Ethiopian Stand Alone Child Labour Survey is the first of its kind to be conducted in the country. The need for this survey arose from the government and other social partners' concern about the increase number of children working in urban areas as well as in the rural areas. Children are commonly involved in domestic chores, and are supposed to assist in manual labour in the agriculture sector such as attending domestic animals, weeding and harvesting. In the urban areas, children are often forced into labour due to a situation of persisting poverty, which requires all family members to contribute to household income. Some of the work in which children are involved are done under hazardous work environment. Therefore, the main concern is not on child work as such, but rather the concern is on those activities that are detrimental to children's physical and mental development. Ethiopia has ratified the UN convention on the Rights of the Child and included provisions in her constitution on basic rights and privileges of children. Although Ethiopia has not signed any of the ILO convention on minimum age, the labour proclamation of Ethiopia (No.42/93) stipulates that children below 14 years are not allowed to work. Employment of young workers between ages 14 and 18 years is also subject to certain conditions such as maximum of seven working hours per day, prohibition of overtime work, night work and provision of weekly rest and public holidays. The same law requires the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MOLSA) to legally prescribe lists of dangerous operations that are detrimental to the health of working children. However, MOLSA has been constrained by lack of data to carry out its mandate. There has been no comprehensive and adequate study, which shows the exact magnitude and situation of child labour in all economic sectors. The availability of data on working children and their analysis on a continuous basis is particularly essential for establishing intervention programs and formulating policies for the eventual elimination of child labour. Therefore the objectives of the 2001 Ethiopia Stand-alone Child Labour Survey is to provide statistical data on children's activities focusing on the status of schooling, non-economic and economic activities. Specifically, the survey is aimed at to provide statistical data that will help to: establish the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of children: age, sex, status and levels of education and training , occupations, skill-level, hours of work, earnings and other working and living conditions; assess the working situation of children and the influence on their education, health, physical and mental development; examine the characteristics of the sectors that employ most children; identify where and how long the children have been working and the factors that lead children to work or families to put children to work; and assess the health and welfare status of working children.

Statistical information on all aspects of socio-economic activities is essential for the designing, monitoring and evaluation of development plans and policies as well as for measuring socio -economic growth. Labour force surveys are among the important sources of data for assessing the role of the population of the country in the economic and social development process. These surveys provide data on the main characteristics of the work force engaged or available to be engaged in productive activities during a given period and also its distribution in the various sectors of the economy. It is also useful to indicate the extent of available and unutilized human resources that must be absorbed by the national economy to ensure full employment and economic well being of the population. Moreover, it further provides an input for assessing the meeting of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the country's poverty reduction strategy framework (PASDEP-Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to End Poverty). The other broad objective of statistics on the labour force is for the measurement of relationship between employment, earnings and other social and economic characteristics of the economically active population for the purpose of formulating, monitoring and evaluation of employment polices and programs. Seasonal and other variations and changes over time in the size and characteristics of employment and unemployment could also be monitored using up-to-date information from labour force survey. The Central Statistical Agency (CSA) has been providing labour force and related data at different levels and with varying details in their content. These include the 1976 Addis Ababa Manpower and Housing Sample Survey, the 1978 Survey on Population and Housing Characteristics of Seventeen Major Towns, the 1980/81 and 1987/88 Rural Labour Force Surveys, the 1984 and 1994 Population and Housing Census, and 2003 and 2004 Urban Bi-annual Employment Unemployment Survey. The 1996 and 2002 Surveys of Informal Sector and most of the household surveys undertaken by the Agency also provide limited information on the area. Still pieces of information in relation to that of employment can also be derived from small, large and medium scale establishment surveys. Till the 1999 Labour Force Survey (LFS) there hasn't been a comprehensive national labour force survey representing both urban and rural areas. This 2005 LFS is the second in the series. Like the National Labour Force Survey of 1999, it covered both the urban and rural areas of all regions. The specific objectives of this survey are to: - generate data on the size of work force that is available to participate in production process; determine the status and rate of economic participation of different sub-groups of the population; identify those who are actually contributing to the economic development (i.e., employed) and those out of the sphere; determine the size and rate of unemployed population; - provide data on the structure of the working population; obtain information about earnings from paid employment; identify the distribution of employed population working in the formal/informal enterprises; and provide time series data and trace changes over time.

The National Longitudinal Study is an ongoing study of the persons who were high school seniors in 1972. Initial interviews were conducted with persons selected from a stratified sample of all private, public, and parochial high schools. Schools in low income areas and those with high black enrollments were oversampled. 22,652 seniors participated in the first wave. This is the fifth follow-up interview, which received an 89% response rate from the stratified sample of 14,489 individuals chosen from the total sample. The purpose of the study is to follow the educational and occupational careers of young people in relation to high school and family backgrounds. The files include data on each student covering ability, socioeconomic status, home background, community environment, ethnicity, significant others, current activity at time of survey, educational attainment, school experiences, school performance, work status, work performance and satisfaction, goal orientatons, marriage and the family, and military experience.
