In the glamorous and secretive world of art, Simon de Pury is the ultimate insider. Having elevated the auction into performance art, he is the most famous of all auctioneers. He has been chairman of the global auction house Phillips de Pury, challenging the duopoly of Sotheby's and Christie's. Before that, he was director of the Thyssen Collection, one of the world's greatest private art collections, then the chairman of Sotheby's Europe. For his style, his longevity and his unprecedented success as an auctioneer Simon has been called the Mick Jagger of the art world, but he is also a major collector and dealer in his own right, and a consultant to heads of state and heads of corporations. The Auctioneer gives us a brilliant behind-the-scenes look at the multi-billion-pound international art dealing world - where on a single night a major auction can rack up sales totalling more than GBP100 million; artists rub shoulders with some of the wealthiest and most powerful people on the planet; and sometimes the buyer really should beware.

The Kunstmuseum Bern owns one of the most important art collections in Switzerland. Since the foundation of the Staatliche Kunstsammlung in Bern in 1809 and the opening of the first museum building in 1879 the collection has grown continuously and has attained world renown. Over 170 masterpieces of the collection are assembled in a single publication for the first time and made accessible to a broad public through new art-historical analyses and numerous colour illustrations. The Kunstmuseum Bern houses prestigious works of Swiss and international art from the late thirteenth century until the present day. The collection contains over 3,000 paintings and sculptures and 48,000 works on paper and videos, including, for example, masterpieces by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dali, Ferdinand Hodler, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Paul Klee, Franz Marc, Henri Matisse, Meret Oppenheim, Pablo Picasso and Felix Vallotton. The works assembled in this volume are presented with full-page illustrations and are re-examined by some 70 international authors. A historical survey describing the development of the museum and its collection opens and introduces the publication.

The most comprehensive monograph to date on the groundbreaking Swiss artist and international art star, Pipilotti Rist A pioneer of experimental video art, Pipilotti Rist is celebrated for her expansive installations that bridge the spaces between fine art and popular culture, the natural world and the technological sublime. Through vivid colors, audaciously sensuous imagery, and playful sexuality, Rist's art-which ranges from single-channel videos to multilayered environments-absorbs viewers in a hyperfeminine aesthetic interlaced with deeper themes of pain, innocence, and transformation.

Architecture, the second Art Brut Biennale, presents a selection of works from the Art Brut Collection (Lausanne), linked together by a common theme. The exhibition and the catalogue show the public new works by perhaps lesser-known authors, while taking a new slant on some historical pieces. Running the gamut from reality to utopia, Art Brut authors design architectures in resonance with their everyday lives or their memories, reorganising the space around them according to their own rules and needs.Their imag- ination and inventiveness carries them to distant, unexplored lands. Yet the vision of architecture that these Art Brut authors offer us here opens up a new dimension, escap- ing all practical considerations. Over 250 works by 52 creators of all origins - European, North American, or Asian - have been selected for the exhibition. This book presents colour illustrations, a short biography, and a bibliography for each artist. The diversity at the heart of this concept can be seen in the many different forms and techniques used, such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and embroidery.Among the artists: Aloi se, Juliette E lisa Bataille, Filippo Bentivegna, Georges Berthomier, Gregory Lee Blackstock, Benjamin Bonjour, E douard Boschey, Luigi Brunetti, Andre Car, Diego, Paul Duhem, Paul End, Samuel Failloubaz, Florent, Jacqueline Fromenteau, Willem Van Genk, Jules Godi, Heer, Magali Herrera, Stefan Holzmu ller, Testuaki Hotta, Norimitsu Kokubo, F. Kouw, Helmut Nimczewski, Nikifor, Prinz Otto, E mile Ratier, Royal Roberston, Hans Saletmeier, Victorien Sardou, Yuri Titov, Johann Tro sch, Yuji Tsuji, Berthe Urasco, Pepe de Valence, Pascal Verbena, Scottie Wilson, Adolf Wo lfli.Building on the legacy of some five thousand pieces collected by Jean Dubuffet between 1945 and 1971, the Art Brut Collection now owns over sixty thousand works, the fruit of nearly forty years of research. Architectures is the second volume in the series Art Brut - The Collection, published by 5 Continents and the Swiss institution, after Vehicles (2014).

Stunning masterpieces of Chinese and Japanese art are presented here alongside the glittering creations that they inspired world-renowned jeweler Cartier to create. This lavishly illustrated book compares and contrasts Cartier s Asian-influenced creations diamond-studded pagodas and pavilions, shimmering phoenixes, jade dragons, and cherry blossoms rendered in colorful gems alongside exotic objects from the Baur Foundation, Museum of Far Eastern Art, in Geneva, Switzerland. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, exotic objects from China and Japan fascinated Westerners, captivating art lovers and influencing designers. Collector Alfred Baur (1865 1951) began assembling his unparalleled collection of Asian works and Paris jeweler Alfred Cartier (1841 1925) began designing Asian-themed jewels and precious objects. Here, side by side with Cartier s precious creations, are imperial porcelains, lacquerware embellished with precious metals, embroidered silks, jades, colored enamels, netsuke, sword hilts, and prints, offering fresh insight into the marvels of China, of Japan, and of Cartier.".

The special exhibition Die gute Form, put on by the Swiss Werkbund (SWB) at the Basel trade fair in 1949, was an event that caused a furor far beyond Switzerland's borders. The renowned architect, designer, and graphic artist Max Bill was the mastermind behind the idea and personally selected the exhibits and designed their setting. Eighty exhibition panels showed consumer objects of exemplary design, from a teacup to the jet plane. Bill recognized the emerging, American-style com- modity aesthetic that was making inroads into Switzerland and postwar Europe and sought to confront it with a specifically "Swiss" aesthetic shaped by a desire to create long-lasting forms. This publication documents Bill's initiative by presenting the original exhibition panels and Ernst Scheidegger's photographs of the installation, places this famous design show in a theoretical and design-historical context, examines its background, and creates a link to the publishing house's first publication from 1983.
