Gender, Violence, and the Past in Edda and Saga is the first book to investigate both the relation between gender and violence in the Old Norse Poetic Edda and key family and contemporary sagas, and the interrelated nature of these genres. Beginning with an analysis of eddaic attitudes to heroic violence and its gendered nature through the figures of Gudrun and Helgi, the study broadens out to the whole poetic compilation and how the past (and particularly the mythological past) inflects the heroic present. This paves the way for a consideration of the comparable relationship between the heroic poems themselves and later reworkings of them or allusions to them in the family and contemporary sagas. The book's thematic concentration on gender/sexuality and violence, and its generic concentration on Poetic Edda and later texts which rework or allude to it, enable a diverse but coherent exploration of both key and neglected Norse texts and the way in which their authors display a dual fascination with and rejection of heroic vengeance.

"Mediating Modernity" examines this probing question: 'What happens to the writing of a printed text when the phonograph and cinematograph - and both names refer, not accidentally, to writing - are able to fix the hitherto unwriteable data flow of time and the visual image?' In her study of literary modernism, Stefanie Harris counters existing scholarship by studying literature as a part, rather than an opponent, of its contemporary media scape, a term used to define both the existing and emerging technologies that served to record and transmit information, but also more broadly, the means by which the world is experienced and understood. Through an interdisciplinary examination that includes close studies of Rilke, Doblin, Dos Passos, Pinthus, Musil, and Hofmannsthal - and relies on the theoretical works of Foucault, Benjamin, and particularly Friedrich Kittler - Harris proposes that literary authors in the early twentieth century, while generally considered far removed from mass culture, engaged in an inevitable, if uneasy, relationship with widespread emergent technologies. These technologies, which radically reoriented temporal and spatial orders and thus the organization of modes of understanding the world, compelled literary authors to draw literature definitively out of the poetically ideal realm and into adaptive contact with other forms of media.
