The First World War was a watershed in human history. Beginning in the European summer of 1914, the conflict reverberated around the world, destroying four empires and costing nearly ten million lives. The years of war also saw major advances in military strategy and tactics, which were reflected in the weapons used on the battlefield. Jonathan Ferguson, Lisa Traynor and Henry Yallop offer an extended introduction to the artillery and personal firearms of the Great War, with particular focus on icons such as the Maxim machine gun. They provide a unique insight into the material culture that not only brought about the horrors of the Somme, Passchendaele and Gallipoli but, arguably, provided the means to bring peace in 1918. The book forms part of a series of introductions to aspects of the Royal Armouries' collection of arms and armour. Written by specialists in the field, they are packed full of fascinating information and stunning photography. Royal Armouries is the national museum of arms and armour, with sites at Leeds, the Tower of London and Fort Nelson, Hampshire.

A guide to the armours and weapons of Henry VIII in the Royal Armouries collection, together with pieces from other collections in Britain and abroad. The armours of King Henry VIII stand as a lasting monument to the sheer physical size of the monarch who stands like a colossus over the making of modern Britain. Yet the armours and weapons of the King also bear witness to the King's involvement in European politics, his alliances and wars with other heads of state such as Francois I of France and the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. They also illustrate his interest in the latest military inventions, as well as his patronage of some of the finest artists and craftsmen of his day.

The ways of war in the Middle Ages never cease to fascinate. There is a glamour associated with knights in shining armour, colourful tournaments and heroic deeds which appeals to the modern imagination, while the technical ingenuity of mighty war engines is a source of admiration. Because mediaeval warfare had its colourful side it is easy to overlook the fact that war was a very serious business in an age when brute force was the recognised way of settling a quarrel and conflicts formed a normal way of life at every level of society. This volume depicts the art of war from a full range of mediaeval books and reveals a wealth of social and historical information, as well as technical data and specifications.
