- Summary
-
The writer Frances Trollope's Domestic Manners of the Americans , complemented by Auguste Hervieu's satiric illustrations, took the transatlantic world by storm in 1832. An unusual combination of realism, visual satire, and novelistic detail, Domestic Manners recounts Trollope's two years as an Englishwoman living in America. Trollope makes the civility of an entire nation the subject of her keen scrutiny, a strategy which would earn her ""more anger and applause than almost any writer of her day."" Auguste Hervieu's twenty-six original illustrations, placed and scaled as in the first edition, are included in this Broadview Edition, inviting readers to experience the original relationship of image and text.

- Summary
-
'it appeared to me that the greatest and best feelings of the human heart were paralyzed by the relative positions of slave and owner' In Domestic Manners of the Americans, Frances Trollope recounts her travels through America between 1827 and 1830, describing her voyage up the Mississippi from New Orleans, a two-year stay in Cincinnati, and a subsequent tour of Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. A transatlantic best-seller on publication in 1832, its forthright criticisms of American manners encompassed spitting, religious extremism, ladies' dress, the relentless pursuit of money, and the unequal treatment of women, slaves, and Native Americans. Witty, satiric, and hugely entertaining, Trollope also had a serious purpose in warning her compatriots of the consequences of democratic freedoms at a time of great social change in England. Deploring slavery and the hypocrisy that sanctioned it, she fuelled abolitionist debate on both sides of the Atlantic and so impressed Mark Twain that fifty years later he considered her book to be the most accurate portrait of American life in the nineteenth century. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

- Trollope, Frances Milton, 1780-1863.
- Stroud : Nonsuch, 2006.
- Description
- Book — 541 p. : ill. ; 17 cm.
- Summary
-
The poor laws and workhouses of the nineteenth-century have had a lasting resonance in literature and art, from Dickens' "Oliver Twist" to Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd"; from James Greenwood's lurid account of "A Night in a Workhouse" to Jack London's "The People of the Abyss" and George Orwell's "The Spike". Fanny Trollope's "Jessie Phillips" ranks alongside such works. Best-known for her scathing reflections on American society in "Domestic Manners of the Americans" (1832), in "Jessie Phillips" we see the novelist turn her hand to the injustice and cruelty that was so prevalent on English soil. Trollope, a contemporary of Jane Austen and the Mitfords, was very much aware of the hierarchical divisions within her society, and the story of Jessie Phillips is a wonderfully engaging account of the struggles and hard-won triumphs of a life lived upon the wrong side of the divide.
