One of the primary objectives of this study was to determine the relationship between leukocyte turnover and serum lysozyme level. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes and moncytes contain relatively high concentrations of this enzyme and it seemed possible that the major portion of the lysozyme found in the plasma is derived from the eventual breakdown of these cells. Of special interest was the problem of previous exposure to ionizing radiation. Late radiation effects might alter serum lysozyme levels through change in leukocyte turnover or increased breakdown of other body tissues.
