In the Hal Roach Studio, classic slapstick was refined with more sophisticated and gradually-paced narratives. From the late 20's through the Depression, Laurel and Hardy were the jewel in the crown of the Hal Roach Studio. These seven films present excerpts and complete films of their great silent short comedies. Also included are the Our Gang comedy team (Dogs of war) and an early film of Will Rogers (Big moments from little pictures).

In Towed in a Hole the two fish peddlers decide to catch their own fish, so they buy an old boat at a junk yard and fix it up. In Busy Bodies the boys are working in a sawmill where they are continuously cleaning up their own messes. In the Academy Award-winning film The Music Box Stan and Ollie try to haul a piano up a long, long, tremendous flight of steps. This video includes rare home movie footage and photographs of the boys at work and play collected and narrated by Stan's daughter, Lois Laurel.

In Short Kilts, a house party in Scotland leads to a feud between the families of two pairs of lovers. In The servant girl's legacy, a servant is beseiged with suitors when she learns she is to inherit a fortune. In Something in her eye, a girl has something in her eye which causes her to wink, leading men to think she is flirting with them.

In Oliver the Eighth, a woman vows vengeance on all men named Oliver by marrying them and killing them. In Laurel-Hardy murder case, the boys stay in a mysterious mansion hoping to claim a fortune. In Dirty Work, they clean the chimney in the home of a mad scientist.

In We Faw Down, the boys sneak away from their wives and end up soaking wet in the apartment of a couple of othe women. In Bromo and Juliet, Charlie Chase appears in a local charity production of Romeo and Juliet. Lucky Dog is an early Stan Laurel comedy with a small part by Hardy as a street thug whose efforts to break up Stan's relationship with his ex girlfriend are thwarted by a dog. Along Came Auntie stars Glenn Tryon as the husband of a woman who has to pretend to still be married to her first husband (Hardy) in order to claim and inheritance. Love 'em and Weep, later remade brilliantly as Chickens Come Home, involves a woman who tries to blackmail businessman Finlayson, while Laurel tries to keep her away from Finn's wife.

Should Sailors Marry is a Clyde Cook comedy in which Clyde's golddigger wife has him insured and then tries to bump him off, with Hardy in a small role as a doctor. Unaccustomed as we are is the the silent version of their first talkie in which Ollie brings Stan home for dinner, to the disapproval of his wife. On the Wrong Track is a Charlie Chase film in which the and his family are robbed on their way to California and end up in a hobo camp; Laurel and Hardy have a cameo as hitchhikers.

In Duck Soup, they hide in a mansion and pretend to be the owner and his maid. In Fluttering Hearts, Charlie Chase takes a job as a chauffeur to be near a girl, whose father is being blackmailed by Hardy. In Leave 'em laughing, the boys get a dose of laughing gas at the dentist and go out on the road in their Model T. In Short Kilts, two Scottish clans try to stop feuding long enough for a wedding.

The Soilers is a shortened version of Stan's 1923 parody of The Spoilers, where the climactic fistfight is continually interruped by a very effeminate cowboy. In 45 minutes from Hollywood, Glen Tryon goes on a tour of Hollywood and is involved in a bank robbery. In Sailors beware Stan is shanghaied aboard Hardy's cruise ship. Double whoopee is an "All-talking" version of the great Laurel and Hardy silent classic in which a hotel footman and doorman are mistaken for visiting royalty, causing havoc among the guests. Originally silent, voice impersonators later dubbed in voices to make it a talkie version. With love and hisses is a beautifully tinted original print of early Laurel and Hardy team which finds the Boys in the Army, causing trouble for Jimmie Finlayson.
