α-axis oriented EuBa₂Cu₃O₇ films have been irradiated with high energy heavy ions in different configurations to study the possible pinning role of the artificial defects in this kind of samples. The original pinning limiting mechanism of the samples is not essentially altered what the irradiation is parallel to the CuO₂ planes. However, when it is deviated from this direction, an increase in critical current density and a change in pinning force are observed when the magnetic field is parallel to the columnar defects at values around the matching field.
