In the year 1577 Father John of the cross, poet, church reformer and future saint has been taken prisoner at the Carmelite order in Toledo where he is sentenced to the penance of seclusion and stripped of freedom indefinitely. The guards systematically torture and starve him to break his resistance but the warden, impressed with his candor, gives him pen and paper to write his poems. The dark night explores the thoughts and feelings of Saint John of the cross, his dreams, his visions, and his mysterious spirituality.
