4. Cy Twombly [2017]

Book
317 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 29 cm
The American artist Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was one of the seminal artists of the second half of the twentieth century, with a complex oeuvre extending over six decades. His work brilliantly fused the legacy of American Abstract Expressionism with the intellectual rigor of classical European and Mediterranean culture, reflecting his extensive reading in history, classical literature, and mythology. This catalogue, edited by curator Jonas Storsve, accompanies a sweeping retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, one of the largest exhibitions on his work to date. Twombly s artistic development is traced through more than 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs which span his entire career, including three major history painting cycles - Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963), Fifty Days at Iliam (1978), and Coronation of Sesostris (2000). From his early works at the beginning of the 1950s which were characterized by the interweaving of text with his signature scrawled lines, to his final, vibrantly colored, paintings, this survey underscores Twombly's career as a series of cycles in which he invented painting anew. Polyphonic in conception, Cy Twombly presents a range of views with essays that shed light on the various aspects and phases of his body of work. It includes reflections by contemporary artists (Sally Mann, Edmund de Waal, and Katharina Grosse, among others) as well as recollections by his former assistant, archivist, companion and the president of the Cy Twombly Foundation, Nicola Del Roscio. Together these multiple voices bring Cy Twombly to life, illuminating his creative process and the humanity that underlies his work.

5. David Hockney [2017]

A full career retrospective of one of the greatest and most popular living artists, lavishly illustrated with works from across the artist's six-decade career David Hockney has been delighting and challenging audiences for almost sixty years. Working in an extraordinarily wide range of media with equal measures of wit and intelligence, his art has examined, probed and questioned how the perceived world of movement, space and time can be captured in two dimensions. Showcasing over 200 works (including painting, drawings, photographs, watercolours, iPad drawings, and his most recent multi-screen works) from across the six decades of his remarkable career, the book will delight existing fans of the artist, while giving new audiences the fullest possible introduction to his life and work.

7. Imprimer le monde [2017]

Book
330 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 21 cm.

11. Walker Evans [2017]

Book
319 pages : chiefly illustrations (some color), portraits ; 29 cm
Walker Evans was one of the most important American photographers of the 20th century. His focus on everyday life in America, in both urban and rural settings, makes him also one of the most relatable. This retrospective volume traces Evans' career through more than 300 images-from his first photographs of the late 1920s to his Polaroids of the 1970s. Organized thematically, the book examines topics such as Evans' relationship with the impresario Lincoln Kirstein, his work in postcards and magazines, and his lifelong exploration of the American vernacular. In addition, this volume features items from the photographer's own collection, including personal writings, signage, postcards, and other ephemera. Through these ancillary objects and a thorough overview of Evans' career, readers will come away with a better understanding of a photographer whose iconic photographs remain timeless.

A lively intellectual biography of one of the 20th century's most iconic buildings The Centre Georges Pompidou, also called Beaubourg, is today considered an icon of contemporary Paris, the quintessence of a modern building, and a model for what a museum can be. In 1971, Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, together with the engineering firm Ove Arup & Partners, won an international architecture competition with their innovative and irreverent design. Completed in 1977, the building was at first received skeptically by critics, yet it was quickly embraced by the public as a beloved monument of the modern city of Paris. This lively intellectual biography of the building explores its history and the reasons for its success, from its genesis as a politically calculated response to Paris's turbulent 1968 student protests to the role played by architects in its construction, as well as the historical influences and the engineering solutions that inform its design. A key reason for the Centre Pompidou's success indeed lies in its ability to channel architectural memory, connecting it powerfully to Paris's historic urban fabric. This essential text on one of the twentieth century's most significant buildings is accompanied by a portfolio of rare drawings and photographs.

Gerhard Richter is widely regarded as one of the most important painters at work today. He is as well known for his figurative works as he is for his abstract paintings, often combining elements of both in ground-breaking ways. Gerhard Richter: Panorama is the first and most complete overview of Richter's whole career. Where previous monographs have focused on a single aspect of his work, this stunningly illustrated survey encompasses his entire oeuvre, now stretching across more than a half-century of activity. It includes his photo-paintings, abstracts, landscapes and seascapes, portraits, colour charts, glass and mirror works, sculptures, drawings and photographs, providing the definitive account of Richter's colossal artistic achievements. Alongside his celebrated abstractions, early black-and-white paintings and the photorealist depictions of candles, skulls and clouds that have become indisputable icons of modern painting, this new edition of Panorama includes over forty paintings made between 2000 and 2015, studio photographs and archival images, alongside texts by an array of international critics and curators. With more than 300 illustrations, and an interview with the artist by Nicholas Serota, Director of Tate, this landmark publication remains the most comprehensive survey of one of the world's most pre-eminent contemporary artists.

16. Hervé Télémaque [2016]

Book
