A History of the Royal Hospital Chelsea looks at the hospital's beginnings, with its Royal patronage and heritage which dates back to King Charles ll in 1682\. It then goes on to look at some of the characters who have been In Pensioners at the hospital over the centuries, as well as some of the individuals who have been buried in the Hospital's grounds. This includes the ashes of the ex British Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher and her husband, Sir Dennis Thatcher. The Hospital survived both the First and Second World Wars, although it did not escape totally unscathed, suffering both damage and loss of life at the hands of German aircraft. There is an in depth look at the hospital's governors, from the very first one, Colonel Sir Thomas Ogle (1686 - 1702), up until the present time with General Sir Redmond Watt, KCB, KCVO, CBE, DL (2011 - to present - 2017). The book also looks in some detail at a few of those who currently live and work at the hospital (2017).

- Summary
-
In recent years, the number of U.S. service members treated for psychological health conditions has increased substantially. In particular, at least two psychological health conditions -- posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) -- have become more common, with prevalence estimates up to 20 percent for PTSD and 37 percent for MDD. Delivering quality care to service members with these conditions is a high-priority goal for the military health system (MHS). Meeting this goal requires understanding the extent to which the care the MHS provides is consistent with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and its own standards for quality. To better understand these issues, RAND Corporation researchers developed a framework to identify and classify a set of measures for monitoring the quality of care provided by the MHS for PTSD and MDD. The goal of this project was to identify, develop, and describe a set of candidate quality measures to assess care for PTSD and MDD. To accomplish this goal, the authors performed two tasks: (1) developed a conceptual framework for assessing the quality of care for psychological health conditions and (2) identified a candidate set of measures for monitoring, assessing, and improving the quality of care for PTSD and MDD. This document describes their research approach and the candidate measure sets for PTSD and MDD that they identified. The current task did not include implementation planning but provides the foundation for future RAND work to pilot a subset of these measures.

- Threat, Charissa J., 1976- author.
- Urbana, Illinois : University of Illinois Press, [2015]
- Description
- Book — 1 online resource (217 pages) : illustrations.
- Summary
-
In Nursing Civil Rights, Charissa J. Threat investigates the parallel battles against occupational segregation by African American women and white men in the U.S. Army. As Threat reveals, both groups viewed their circumstances with the Army Nurse Corps as a civil rights matter. Each conducted separate integration campaigns to end the discrimination they suffered. Yet their stories defy the narrative that civil rights struggles inevitably arced toward social justice. Threat tells how progressive elements in the campaigns did indeed break down barriers in both military and civilian nursing. At the same time, she follows conservative threads to portray how some of the women who succeeded as agents of change became defenders of exclusionary practices when men sought military nursing careers. The ironic result was a struggle that simultaneously confronted and reaffirmed the social hierarchies that nurtured discrimination.

- Summary
-
Volume 15 of the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Wars and the War Office , picks up on the previous volume's recounting of Nightingale's famous work during the Crimean War and the comprehensive analysis she did on its high death rates. This volume moves on to the implementation of the recommendations that emerged from that research and to her work to reduce deaths in the next wars, beginning with the American Civil War. Nightingale's writings describe the creation of the Army Medical School, the vast improvements made in the statistical tracking of disease, and new measures for soldiers' welfare. Her role in the formulation of the first Geneva Convention in 1864 is related, along with her concern that voluntary relief efforts through the Red Cross not make war "cheap." Nightingale was decorated by both sides for her work in the Franco-Prussian War. While much of her work concerned the mundane sending out of supplies, we see also in her writing her emerging interest in militarism as the cause of war. Her opposition to the Afghan War (of her time) and her work to provide nursing for the Egyptian campaigns, the Zulu War, and the start of the Boer War are also included.

- Summary
-
"This monograph presents the results of a project entitled Improving Army Doctrine and Planning for Stability Operations. A great deal of activity has been aimed at revising the approach to the planning and implementation of Stabilization, Security, Transition, and Reconstruction (SSTR) operations. The primary emphasis of the changes is on ensuring a common U.S. strategy rather than a collection of individual departmental and agency efforts and on mobilizing and involving all available U.S. government assets in the effort. However, using a template to assess the extent of progress in building collaborative interagency capacity for SSTR operations, the authors find that some elements essential to the success of the process are not yet in place. They provide a series of recommendations on how the Army, as a major stakeholder, can act to advance the interagency process. The authors also assess the ongoing development of Army doctrine on SSTR operations and compare it to the emerging guidelines for SSTR operations at the interagency level. They provide specific recommendations for the Army to consider in revising its doctrine on SSTR operations, to bring it further in line with interagency guidelines. They also point out omissions in the security sector of the emerging interagency task list for SSTR operations."--Publisher's website.
