6. Congenital heart disease : a clinical, pathological, embryological, and segmental analysis [2023]
- Van Praagh, Richard. author.
- First edition - Philadephia, PA : Elsevier, [2023]
- Description
- Book — online resource : illustrations (chiefly color)
- Summary
-
Authored by the originator of the standard nomenclature for this spectrum of disorders, Congenital Heart Disease: A Clinical, Pathological, Embryological, and Segmental Analysis discusses the history, anatomic features, and physiologic consequences of CHD-in one authoritative resource. The Van Praagh approach to the segmental classification of CHD, developed and implemented by Dr. Richard Van Praagh in the 1960s at Boston Children's Hospital, remains widely used today, facilitating communication among radiologists, cardiologists, surgeons, and pediatricians who are involved in the diagnosis, characterization, and management of this disease. This unique atlas offers complete coverage of the ubiquitous Van Praagh "language of CHD, including the signs, symptoms, and clinical manifestations of malpositioned, malformed, or absent cardiovascular chambers, vessels, and valves using traditional as well as state-of-the-art technology. Based upon the systematic, widely accepted Van Praagh system of three-part notation used to succinctly describe the visceroatrial situs, the orientation of the ventricular loop, and the position and relation of the great vessels. Demonstrates how the Van Praagh approach facilitates interpreting and reporting findings through cardiac imaging with CT, MR, and ultrasonography, including fetal cardiac imaging. Presents the pathologic anatomy that pediatric and adult cardiologists, radiologists, and echocardiographers need to understand in order to make accurate diagnoses in complex congenital heart disease; as well as the pathologic anatomy that interventionists, pediatric cardiac surgeons, and adult congenital heart surgeons need to know in order to manage their patients successfully. Features more than 550 high-quality images to help you visualize and recognize malformations. Shares the knowledge and expertise of a world-renowned authority on congenital heart disease-a master teacher and the originator of the Van Praagh segmental classification system. Explores the synergy between the various disciplines who manage patient care, including surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists, pathologists, and pediatricians. Enhanced eBook version included with purchase. Your enhanced eBook allows you to access all of the text, figures, and references from the book on a variety of devices.

"Nelson Pediatric Symptom-Based Diagnosis, by Drs. Robert M. Kliegman, Brett Bordini, Heather Toth, and Donald Basel is intended to help the reader begin with a specific chief complaint that may be seen in many different disease entities. It is arranged in chapters that cover specific symptoms mirroring clinical practice. For example, patients do not usually present with a chief complaint of cystic fibrosis; rather, they may present with a cough, respiratory distress, or chronic diarrhea. With a user-friendly, well-tabulated, illustrated approach, this text will help the reader differentiate between the many disease states causing a common symptom."-Publisher's description.

- Summary
-
"The Fifth edition is based on the idea that the ability to read, critique, and participate in nursing research is essential to create and use evidence for nursing practice. The book is aimed specifically at undergraduate nursing students, nurses returning to school, and practicing nurses that must apply evidence to practice at the bedside. All nurses need to be able to critically read research, determine how to use it in their practice, and participate in the research process in some way during their career. This text is intended to support all these efforts. A strength of this text is that it helps the reader gain a fundamental understanding of all types of research that may be used for evidence"-- Provided by publisher

- Summary
-
"The Social Construction of Difference and Inequality: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality, Eighth Edition, surveys how and why the categories of race, class, gender, and sexuality are constructed, maintained, experienced, and transformed. This popular anthology moves beyond simply discussing various forms of stratification and the impact on members of marginalized groups by providing a thorough discussion of how such systems of stratification are formed, perpetuated, and interconnected. Each reading ends with critical-thinking questions to help students relate content to their own lives and understand how their attitudes, actions, and perspectives may serve to perpetuate a stratified system"-- Provided by publisher

31. Tibial plateau fractures [2023]
- Riehl, John T. author.
- First edition - Philadelphia : Elsevier, [2023].
- Description
- Book — online resource (volume) illustrations (chiefly color)
- Summary
-
"Tibial Plateau Fractures has been written to provide a single text that covers every aspect of treatment of these complex fractures with a focus on practical clinical knowledge. Modern treatment strategies have been clearly defined based on recent literature and cutting-edge fixation techniques. Case examples and high yield points are highlighted at the end of every chapter in order to help the reader come away with the most crucial aspects of care as determined by the surgeon experts who have authored each chapter. Reduction techniques for percutaneous and open surgical treatment of these fractures has been emphasized. Additionally, an entire chapter has been devoted to soft tissue injuries that occur in conjunction with tibial plateau fractures. This is an important distinction from other books, chapters, and journal articles, on the subject, as soft tissue injuries are often overlooked in prior works with a focus on the bony injury only. Untreated soft tissue injuries can be a source of long-term disability and poor outcomes in these multifaceted injuries. This book intends to help the reader identify all aspects of care in the treatment of tibial plateau fractures and help the surgeon to achieve the best possible outcome." -- from preface.

In 1942 there was a domestic crisis in Britain. Public morale collapsed with a widespread feeling that Winston Churchill was no longer the right man to lead the nation. In the course of the crisis, motions of No-Confidence were debated in Parliament. A credible rival for Prime Minister emerged. This panic followed a series of major military fiascos. If its war effort folded, Britain would have had to negotiate a truce with Hitler. Had Britain been forced out of the war by this in 1942, it would have been almost impossible for the US to fight back in Europe. The survival of fascism, the outcome of the titanic battles on the Eastern Front and the ultimate result of the war could all have been very different.1942 tells the story of this precarious moment when the British people nearly lost it.

54. 50 masterpieces of Czech cubism : from the collections of the gallery of west Bohemia in Pilsen [2022]
- London : Scala Art and Heritage Publishers Limited, 2022.
- Description
- Book — 120 pages : illustrations (color) ; 19 cm
- Summary
-
Czech Cubism is one of the most important contributions of modern Czech art to world culture. These works, created approximately between 1910 and 1935, embrace painting, drawing, graphic art, collage, sculpture, architecture and applied art, and the movement's leading lights - including painters Emil Filla and Bohumil Kubista, sculptor Otto Gutfreund and architect Pavel Janak - were among the most exciting practitioners of Cubism anywhere in the world. The Gallery of West Bohemia is home to one of the most important collections of the best Czech Cubist art, painstakingly assembled since the early 1960s. The artworks included here have played a vital role in rehabilitating the avant-garde in a country where modernist art had suffered decades of political repression. As such, the collections of the Gallery of West Bohemia have been crucial to the revival of the domestic art scene in Bohemia and beyond, and continue to inspire contemporary Czech artists. This book, expertly compiled by Gallery Director Roman Musil and his team, introduces some of the finest works of Czech Cubism to an international audience.

62. Abacus of loss : a memoir in verse [2022]
- Wolpé, Sholeh, author.
- Fayetteville : The University of Arkansas Press, 2022
- Description
- Book — xi, 111 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm
- Summary
-
Albert Einstein said, "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." It is in this vein that Sholeh WolpE's mesmerizing memoir in verse unfolds. In this lyrical and candid work, her fifth collection of poems, WolpE invokes the abacus as an instrument of remembering. Through different countries and cultures, she carries us bead by bead on a journey of loss and triumph, love and exile. In the end, the tally is insight, not numbers, and we arrive at a place where nothing is too small for gratitude.

- Ferrell, Elizabeth, author.
- New Haven : Yale University Press, [2022]
- Description
- Book — vii, 237 pages : illustrations (black and white, and colour) ; 26 cm
- Summary
-
A remarkable portrait of a web of artistic connections, traced outward from Jay DeFeo's uniquely generative work of art Through deep archival research and nuanced analysis, Elizabeth Ferrell examines the creative exchange that developed with and around The Rose, a monumental painting on which the San Francisco artist Jay DeFeo (1929-1989) worked almost exclusively from 1958 to 1966. From its early state to its dramatic removal from DeFeo's studio, the painting was a locus of activity among Fillmore District artists. Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Wally Hedrick, and Michael McClure each took up The Rose in their photographs, films, paintings, and poetry, which DeFeo then built upon in turn. The resulting works established a dialogue between artists rather than seamless cooperation. Illustrated with archival photographs and personal correspondence, in addition to the artworks, Ferrell's book traces how The Rose became a stage for experimentation with authorship and community, defying traditional definitions of collaboration and creating alternatives to Cold War America's political and artistic binaries.

80. An accidental icon : how I dodged a bullet, spoke truth to power and lived to tell the tale [2022]
- Scott, Norman, author.
- London : Hodder & Stoughton, 2022
- Description
- Book — 328 pages, 8 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
'Compelling' The Daily Mail 'So many gripping moments... a real cracker' The Evening Standard The jaw-dropping and inspiring story of accidental queer icon Norman Scott (the hero of TV drama A Very English Scandal) and the part he played in one of the greatest political scandals of the 20th century. In October 1975 an assassin tried to murder Norman Scott on Exmoor but the trigger failed and he only succeeded in shooting Scott's beloved dog, Rinka. Scott subsequently found himself at the centre of a major political scandal and became an unlikely queer icon. But this was never his intention... He was born in 1940 into a poor, dysfunctional and abusive family. Aged sixteen he began an equestrian career, animals having been the one source of comfort in his childhood. By the age of twenty he had run into debts and had suffered a nervous breakdown. In 1960 Scott began a sexual affair with Jeremy Thorpe. By the time of the attempted assassination of Scott, Thorpe was married, leader of the Liberal Party and a figure at the heart of the establishment. He was embarrassed by their former relationship and wanted to cover it up. But he failed. The assassination attempt culminated in a sensational trial in 1979, where Thorpe was tried for conspiracy to murder. The press labelled Scott a madman and the establishment protected Thorpe, who was acquitted. Only recently has Scott's version of events been vindicated. An Accidental Icon tells a story that is inspiring and jaw droppingly unbelievable: it is the tale of the courage and survival of one man who took on the establishment.

- Summary
-
Is there an acoustical equivalent to Walter Benjamin's idea of the optical unconscious? In the 1930s, Benjamin was interested in how visual media expand our optical perception: the invention of the camera allowed us to see images and details that we could not consciously perceive before. This study argues that Benjamin was also concerned with how acoustical media allow us to "hear otherwise, " that is, to listen to sound structures previously lost to the naked ear. Crucially, they help sensitize us to the discursive sonority of words, which Benjamin was already alluding to in his autobiographical work. In five chapters that range in scope from Tieck's Blonde Eckbert, which Benjamin once called his locus classicus of his theory of forgetting, to Alexander Kluge's films and short texts, where he develops what he calls "sound perspectives, " this monograph discusses how the acoustical unconscious enriches our understanding of different media, from the written word to radio and film. As the first book-length study of Benjamin's linguistic, cultural-historical, and media-theoretical reflections on sound, this book will be particularly relevant to students and scholars of both German studies and sound studies.

- Summary
-
How do we take stock of a life-by what means, and by what measure? This is the question that preoccupies Alice, a Taiwanese immigrant in her late thirties. In the off-hours from her day job, Alice struggles to create a project about the enigmatic downtown performance artist Tehching Hsieh and his monumental, yearlong 1980s performance pieces. Meanwhile, she becomes the caretaker for her aging stepfather, a Vietnam vet whose dream of making traditional Chinese furniture dissolved in alcoholism and dementia. As Alice roots deeper into Hsieh's radical use of time-in one piece, the artist confined himself to a cell for a year; in the next, he punched a time clock every hour, on the hour, for a year-and his mysterious disappearance from the art world, her project starts metabolizing events from her own life. She wanders from subway rides to street protests, loses touch with a friend, and tenderly observes her father's slow decline. Moving between present-day and 1980s New York City, with detours to Silicon Valley and the Venice Biennale, this vivid debut announces Lisa Hsiao Chen as an audacious new talent. Activities of Daily Living is a lucid, intimate examination of the creative life and the passage of time.
