This book represents a selection of papers presented by academics and researchers at the 12th Conference on British and American Studies. They are grouped in two main theme clusters, corresponding to the two chapters of the book: Languages in Contact and Languages in Use and Multidisciplinarity and Multiculturalism in Literary Studies. In the first section, language is described, in turn, as subject to influence by other language systems, as an object of learning and acquisition, and as an instrument enabling users to bridge between cultures, disciplinary domains, and people. The second part of the volume is mainly concerned with such notions as hybridity, tolerance, identity, subversion and deconstruction, as reflected in classical and contemporary Anglo-American literary texts.

This volume brings together a selection of papers in linguistics presented at the 13th edition of the Conference on British and American Studies. Structured into three chapters, the studies included here are illustrative for the different perspectives, methodologies, and research traditions in the investigation of language-related phenomena. The first chapter, "Language Change and Cross-Linguistic Analysis", is mainly concerned with the external and internal catalysts for language change, and with a number of morphosyntactic and semantic particularities of Romanian, set in contrast with other languages. Aspects related to first or second language learning and language as an instrument of thought form the content of the second chapter, "Language Acquisition, Teaching and Processing". The focus of the final chapter, "Pragmatics, Translation, and the Negotiation of Meaning", is language as an instrument of power and (self-)communication.

"Aux États-Unis, en Grande-Bretagne, en Franc; le début du millénaire a vu se multiplier des discours épurés de toute référence à la catégorie de "race". La tolérance et la diversité sont désormais les registres dominants que l'on emploie pour parler de questions relevant auparavant de cette dernière. Ainsi, aux États-Unis, l'élection de Barack Obama a donné un puissant élan à ce que Thomas Sugrue nomme le "grand récit de la réconciliation raciale", en dépit de la racialisation évidente des inégalités sociales. De part et d'autre de l'Atlantique, la notion de color-blindness gagne en influence. Elle dissimule une forme de racisme culturel, ou de racisme différentialiste, qui se diffuse dans la sphère publique, et que revendiquent même parfois certains responsables politiques. Cette évolution intervient dans un contexte de remise en cause des modèles nationaux d'intégration et de déclarations catégoriques sur le prétendu échec du multiculturalisme : prises de position dont l'objet est de critiquer des politiques jugées trop différentialistes, tout en pointant du doigt certaines catégories de la population dont l'intégration s'avérerait problématique. Ce volume se propose de mieux comprendre les logiques sociales de racialisation, et leur rapport au politique, dans une perspective comparative et en recourant à différentes disciplines. The World of Regulatory Institutions Has Been in a State of Flux for the last two decades, and valuable lessons can be learned from a comparative focus on the nature and causes of institutional change and reform in the regulatory agencies and institutions of United States, Canada, and Great Britain.The contributing authors, mainly political scientists and legal scholars but also practicing regulators, make the case for a much broader conceptual view of regulation; that it is increasingly necessary for key regulatory interests -- business and consumers -- to understand regulation in terms of an interplay among four regions: sectoral, framework, intra-cabinet and international. They also explore inter-regime regulatory institutional relations through case studies to demonstrate how regulatory institutions respond to competing regulatory requirements, and to tensions between sectoral utility regulators and competition and environmental regulators.Other key comparisons are drawn out, such as the independence and autonomy of regulators, implementation, economic governance and different paths towards reform. The essential contrast between the three nations studied shows that institutional change in the UK has been explicitly structural, and that a new 'regulatory state' has been more openly and fully rediscovered in that country while change within a federal structure such as exists in the us and Canada has tended to remain more intra-governmental.The book seeks to provide students of regulation with a work that focuses on the political and institutional that they can place alongside examinations of the economic and legal perspectives.

This work consists of a selection of key papers presented at the first Anglo-Japanese Comparative Law Conference, held at Jesus College, Cambridge in September 1996. The conference was organized under the auspices of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London; the University of Tsukuba, Japan; and Murdoch University in Australia. The conference brought together a number of leading business lawyers from around the world, who discussed the impact of globalization on commercial law. If the internalization of trade and business has produced problems for lawyers, the impact of globalization, particularly in such areas as the capital markets, has proved to be even more problematic. The implications for all those who operate in the commercial and financial sectors, and for those who advise them, of developments in the nature and character of the markets are increasingly significant.
