- First edition. - New York : Liveright Publishing Corporation, a division of W.W. Norton & Company, [2018]
- Description
- Book — xxvi, 388 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
Twins Chang and Eng Bunker (1811-1874), conjoined at the sternum by a band of cartilage and a fused liver, were "discovered" in Siam by a British merchant in 1824. Yunte Huang depicts the twins, arriving in Boston in 1829, first as museum exhibits but later as financially savvy showmen. Their rise from freak-show celebrities to rich southern gentry; their marriage to two white sisters, resulting in twenty-one children; and their owning of slaves is here not just another sensational biography but an excavation of America's historical penchant for finding feast in the abnormal, for tyrannising the "other"-a tradition that, as Huang reveals, becomes inseparable from American history itself.

- Summary
-
The great significance of the Meckel Collections ? as collections dedicated to the teaching and research of anatomy, but also as a scientific institution well worth seeing ? extends far beyond the city of Halle (Saale). In the 18th century, the character of institutions of this kind had begun to change. They were no longer baroque cabinets of curiosities, but significant locations in the quest for new knowledge.0Armed with new technical processes, anatomists and preparators achieved remarkable results, creating specimens invaluable to the systematic analysis of human and animal bodies and working to produce fascinating, delicate artworks. The Meckel family of doctors combined skilled handiwork, imaginative entrepreneurship, and a visionary commitment to research. Translated by Alison Kirkland.

- Summary
-
Santiago Ramon y Cajal (1852-1934), the father of modern neuroscience and a Nobel laureate, was an exceptional artist. He devoted his life to the anatomy of the brain, the body's most complex and mysterious organ. His superhuman feats of visualisation, based on fanatically precise techniques and countless hours at the microscope, resulted in some of the most remarkable illustrations in the history of science. Beautiful Brain presents a selection of his exquisite drawings of brain cells, brain regions and neural circuits with accessible descriptive commentary. An art book at the crossroads of art and science, Beautiful Brain describes Cajal's contributions to neuroscience, explores his artistic roots and achievement and looks at his work in relation to contemporary neuroscience imaging techniques.

- DeFelipe, Javier. author.
- New York, NY : Oxford University Press, 2017.
- Description
- Book — online resource (xxii, 484 pages) : illustrations
- Summary
-
This collection contains hundreds of beautiful rarely-seen-before figures produced throughout the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century by famed father-of-modern-neuroscience Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) and his contemporaries. Cajal was captivated by the beautiful shapes of the cells of the nervous system. He and his fellow scientists saw neurons as trees and glial cells as bushes. Given their high density and arrangement, neurons and glial resembled a thick forest, a seemingly impenetrable terrain of interacting cells mediating cognition and behavior.
