This practical course aims to enable the reader to understand the field of NMR experiments for structure determination. The experiments featured have been chosen mainly because of their importance and general applicability. Three compounds have been chosen as the main demonstration samples - chloroform, ethyl crotonate and strychnine (which should be used as a sealed sample). A scheme has been adopted for the detailed description of the experiments, organized in the following specific sections: "Purpose" explains the idea and goal of the experiment and refers the user to related experiments; "Literature" presents references to the original publication and to improvements and/or sections in monographs and reviews; "Pulse Scheme and Phase Cycle" gives the pulse sequence in an instrument-independent graphic and self-explanatory form, and the phase cycles of the pulses and the receiver; "Acquisition" is the main section, with instructions on the sample to be used, the spectrometer configuration, the type of programme and the parameters necessary for the performance of the experiment; "Processing" describes how to treat the time-domain data; "Results" presents the spectrum obtained by following the procedure exactly; and "Comments" contains an explanation of the most important steps of the pulse sequence. In general, the conditions for the experiments have not been optimized. In all cases, the results are presented exactly as they were obtained, without cosmetic retouching; sometimes, the samples used even show impurities.

Chiral materials have been studied in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia for applications in areas like asymmetric catalysis, enantioselective fluorescent sensing, and optical/electrical materials. Optically active 1,1'-binaphthyl molecules are used to build novel chiral polymers, dendrimers, macrocycles, and acyclic molecules. 1,1'-Binaphthyl molecules are chosen because of their remarkably stable chiral configuration as well as their high asymmetric inductions in many processes.In this book, both the fundamental knowledge about the 1,1'-binaphthyl molecules and the synthesis of the structurally diverse 1,1'-binaphthyl-based materials are described. The applications of these materials in various fields are also discussed. This book will serve as a reference for graduate students as well as other professionals working in the related fields.

This monograph deals with ab initio variational calculations of vibrational-rotational spectra of bent triatomic molecules. It gives a comprehensive derivation of the Eckart-Watson Hamiltonian in terms of an "f" co-ordinate system. The derived Hamiltonian is in the most general form and so is shown to collapse to C2v and D3h rectilinear Hamiltonians. Concommitant with the derived Hamiltonians, a complete solution algorithm of the nuclear Schrodinger equation is detailed. The eigenfunctions of numerical finite-element solutions of three one-dimensional Schrodinger equations are spliced together to form configurational trial basis functions for the variational solution of the three-dimensional vibrational problem. These solutions, together with the symmetric top eigenfunctions, span the full vibrational-rotational Hamiltonian. Examples of variational solutions of the full vibrational-rotational Hamiltonians are given throughout the text.

The primary purpose of this book is to help the reader understand what is going on in Fourier Transform (FT) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Modern life is now very largely life with "black boxes" that carry warning labels: "No user-servicable parts inside". Many find black boxes to be quite acceptable, at least as long as they work. But how willing should we be to accept black-box analyses without some understanding of how those analyses were obtained? NMR spectrometers are like "black boxes" in that they offer many standardized procedures without understanding how and why the proper parameter choices are critical. The scope of this book is broad rather than deep with the intention of providing helpful insight. Much can be understood in a more qualitative way and that is the approach taken here. For those areas where a quantitative approach is needed, simple mathematics will usually suffice.
