2. Old Asian, new Asian [2017]
- Ng, Emma, author.
- Wellington, New Zealand : Bridget Williams Books Limited, 2017.
- Description
- Book — 103 pages ; 18 cm.
- Summary
-
"In 2010, the Human Rights Commission found that Asian people reported higher levels of discrimination than any other minority in New Zealand. Yet although anti-Asian prejudice has a long history in New Zealand, it is seldom publicly acknowledged. K. Emma Ng shines light onto the persistence of anti-Asian sentiment in New Zealand. Her anecdotal account is based on her personal experience as a second-generation young Chinese-New Zealand woman and those of other young Asian-New Zealanders. When Asian people have been living here since the Gold Rush, she asks, what will it take for them to be fully accepted as New Zealanders?"--Publisher information.

- Sydney, NSW : NewSouth Publishing, 2017.
- Description
- Book — xii, 334 pages : map ; 24 cm
- Summary

It was no wonder I was glad to be down in Woolloomooloo. The Old Fitzroy reminded me of how Kings Cross used to be. Told in his vivid and entertaining style, Louis Nowra writes Woolloomooloo's biography, drink in hand, from the vantage point of the Old Fitzroy Hotel, the cosy, eccentric and wonderful pub on Dowling Street, Woolloomooloo. It's a world of sex, sin, sly grog, sailors, razor gangs, larrikins, workers, artisans, murderers, fishermen, activists, drinkers, fashion designers, tradies, artists and the downright dangerous. It's also a story of courage, resilience, tolerance, compassion. And though the pub has a real theatre, it's the cast of real-life characters that are the stars of this show. Woolloomooloo's past wraps around its present. Louis - often accompanied by Coco the Chihuahua and other two-legged locals, often walks the streets, uncovering history - some official, some never revealed. He stumbles across pockets of beauty and charm, and the derelict and abandoned. Unforgettable - and unspellable - Woolloomooloo in this book is a place as fascinating as its name. Listen to Louis Nowra's interview on Radio National's Books + Arts.

Young New Zealanders have an incurable urge to travel and see that world which we hear so much about but from which we feel so separated. The 'big OE' has become part of New Zealand culture. It is an astonishing phenomenon that enriches our life in innumerable ways and most people look back on those experiences with rueful fondness. The Big OE is a collection of 37 varied and entertaining New Zealander's travel stories which are sure to trigger memories for those who have been and inspire those who want to go. These stories represent a wide range of OE experience spanning 50 years but with an emphasis on the 60s and 70s. They are not about museums, holy places or scenery but the sort of experience that create long-lasting memories. From the ubiquitous first stop of Earls Court in London and a variety of jobs to save money while there, these young travellers took Contiki tours around exotic North Africa, The Magic Bus to Greece or hitchhiked on their own itinerary. After two months, two years or more most headed for home. They followed the Marco Polo route to India, sailed through the Caribbean, hitchhiked back via Canada and America, or drove overland to South Africa. The stories recollected in The Big OE are as varied as the people who told them, for example: * Three Speed Cardigans - In the early 50's three young women cycle through Britain and bombed-out Germany causing quite a stir in their hand-knitted cardigans emblazoned with a kiwi and map of New Zealand. * Fly Spray and Hakas - Its amazing what you resort to when faced with a band of gypsies demanding money on a barren plateau in Turkey. See over...* Grossly Overloaded - Three punctures in succession prove an impossible challenge for a young Kiwi tour driver/leader behind the iron curtain in "71. The tyres were not able to be fixed but the human exchanges with the men in uniform were memorable. Some are funny, some describe ordinary travel events, others frightening episodes as travellers got into trouble and yet others relate exciting adventures. All of the stories however illustrate some aspect of OE that will be recognised by other travellers. Photographs from personal albums enhance the stories and add another dimension to the nostalgia.
