Box 1 -- Typescript with manuscript corrections, galleys with annotations, and annotated page proofs of his autobiography, entitled, AN ONLY CHILD. Box 2 -- a second set of galleys, a bound set of galleys, and lecture notes from his course on the twentieth century novel, taught at Stanford University (accession 1987-008).

Correspondence files of the executive heads of the department: Herbert Dean Meritt, Richard F. Jones, Virgil K. Whitaker, George F. Sensabaugh, John C. Loftis, and Thomas C. Moser; and minutes from Executive Committee, 1951-1987, department meetings, 1965-1993, and faculty meetings, 1967-1987. Correspondents include Stanford faculty and administrators, English faculty from other colleges, and prospective students. Subjects include faculty appointments, student dissertations, curriculum matters, inquiries from other colleges about faculty candidates among the department's graduate students, and administrative affairs of the department.

Collection includes correspondence, research notes, some biographical material, articles with notes, and material relating to learned societies of which Johnson was a member. Subjects include English and American literature, Medieval science and Renaissance literature.

Papers reflect his career as scholar and teacher at Stanford University. Included are class files, lectures, drafts of articles and reviews, administrative files, and correspondence. There are also files on student unrest of the late 60s and early 70s.
