"We have expanded from seven to eight principles, which has allowed us to delve more deeply into the social and emotional components of learning. A brand new chapter (Chapter 1) explores individual differences among learners, and the intersections of identities and backgrounds that shape how students enter, respond to, and shape the learning environment. A reworked chapter (Chapter 7) investigates more fully the ways that instructors can shape the climate of their courses to make students feel included or marginalized -- and the implications for learning and performance. Across all eight principles, we updated the research previously discussed while integrating new areas of research. Wherever possible, we applied a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens, exploring issues of power, identity, and belonging as they relate to teaching and learning. We have also referenced a broader range of institution types and student populations than in the previous edition, and incorporated case studies and strategies relevant to emerging educational technologies and online and hybrid learning modalities."-- Provided by publisher

- Description
- Book — xvii, 449 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
"This textbook explores two distinct stochastic processes that evolve at random: weakly stationary processes and discrete parameter Markov processes. Building from simple examples, the authors focus on developing context and intuition before formalizing the theory of each topic. This inviting approach illuminates the key ideas and computations in the proofs, forming an ideal basis for further study. After recapping the essentials from Fourier analysis, the book begins with an introduction to the spectral representation of a stationary process. Topics in ergodic theory follow, including Birkhoff's Ergodic Theorem and an introduction to dynamical systems. From here, the Markov property is assumed and the theory of discrete parameter Markov processes is explored on a general state space. Chapters cover a variety of topics, including birth-death chains, hitting probabilities and absorption, the representation of Markov processes as iterates of random maps, and large deviation theory for Markov processes. A chapter on geometric rates of convergence to equilibrium includes a splitting condition that captures the recurrence structure of certain iterated maps in a novel way. A selection of special topics concludes the book, including applications of large deviation theory, the FKG inequalities, coupling methods, and the Kalman filter. Featuring many short chapters and a modular design, this textbook offers an in-depth study of stationary and discrete-time Markov processes. Students and instructors alike will appreciate the accessible, example-driven approach and engaging exercises throughout. A single, graduate-level course in probability is assumed."--Provided by publisher

- Summary

'A must read for all wildlife lovers' Dominic Dyer Foxes, buzzards, crows, badgers, weasels, seals, kites - Britain and Ireland's predators are impressive and diverse and they capture our collective imagination. But many consider them to our competition, even our enemies. The problem is that predators eat what we farm or use for sport. From foxes and ravens attacking new-born lambs to weasels eating game-bird chicks, predators compete with us, putting them directly into the firing line. Farming, fishing, sport and leisure industries want to see numbers of predators reduced, and conservation organisations also worry that predators are threatening some endangered species. Other people, though, will go to great lengths to protect them from any harm. This clashing of worlds can be intense. So, what do we do? One of the greatest challenges facing conservation today is how, when and where to control predators. It is a highly charged debate. Mary Colwell travels across the UK and Ireland to encounter the predators face to face. She watches their lives in the wild and discovers how they fit into the landscape. She talks to the scientists studying them and the wildlife lovers who want to protect them. She also meets the people who want to control them to protect their livelihoods or sporting interests. In this even-handed exploration of the issues, Mary provides a thoughtful and reasoned analysis of the debates surrounding our bittersweet relationship with predators.

32. Abstract algebra : an integrated approach [2022]
- Silverman, Joseph H., 1955- author.
- Providence, Rhode Island : American Mathematical Society, [2022]
- Description
- Book — xvii, 567 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 26 cm
- Summary
-
This abstract algebra textbook takes an integrated approach that highlights the similarities of fundamental algebraic structures among a number of topics. The book begins by introducing groups, rings, vector spaces, and fields, emphasizing examples, definitions, homomorphisms, and proofs. The goal is to explain how all of the constructions fit into an axiomatic framework and to emphasize the importance of studying those maps that preserve the underlying algebraic structure. This fast-paced introduction is followed by chapters in which each of the four main topics is revisited and deeper results are proven. The second half of the book contains material of a more advanced nature. It includes a thorough development of Galois theory, a chapter on modules, and short surveys of additional algebraic topics designed to whet the reader's appetite for further study. This book is intended for a first introduction to abstract algebra and requires only a course in linear algebra as a prerequisite. The more advanced material could be used in an introductory graduate-level course.

- Summary
-
The leading text in the field, Animal Behavior shows how researchers use scientific logic to study the underlying mechanisms and evolutionary bases of behavior, now with a streamlined presentation and enhanced eBook.Be introduced to a rich array of fascinating examples of animal behavior and uses a vivid narrative voice that conveys the excitement of the subject. The upcoming 12th edition's enhanced eBook will make the subject come alive with numerous video and audio clips that will be presented in-line as students read. The enhanced eBook will also include 50 new interactive figures. Another objective instructors have is to help students master concepts and then demonstrate that mastery. To assist instructors with this goal, the 12th edition enhanced eBook will incorporate all-new inline self-assessments, as well as gradable chapter assessment quizzes.Recognise the rigorous scientific methodology involved in animal behavior research with an all-new "Behind the Scenes" feature, where each chapter will highlight a single research paper and look in-depth at how the research was conducted, taking a balanced view of the ultimate and proximate causes underlying how and why animals behave as they do. Rubenstein is renowned for its empirical presentation of the ultimate causes of animal behavior, and this edition will do an even better job of integrating concepts across levels of scale at the proximate level. This need will be addressed by including an even greater focus on Tinbergen's "Four Questions" and by including more integrative studies that cross levels of analysis. A 10% streamline across the content, a redesign of the chapter summaries and the addition of synthetic sections that link topics across the text and media resources will help you traverse Animal Behaviour with ease.NEW TO THIS EDITION:Enhanced integration of concepts across levels of scale: Greater focus on Tinbergen's "Four Questions" & Inclusion of more integrative studies that cross levels of analysis.Streamlined by approximately 10%, primarily by removal of extraneous examples.Added more proximate explanations and integrative examples.Re-designed chapter summaries.Synthetic sections that link topics across the text and media resources will help students get through the information overload.Enhanced eBook edition with numerous video and audio clips presented in-line as students read, 50 new interactive figures, inline self-assessments, lab manual, and discussion questions. This title is available as an enhanced eBook. - Summary
-
Inverse scattering theory is a major theme in applied mathematics, with applications to such diverse areas as medical imaging, geophysical exploration, and nondestructive testing. The inverse scattering problem is both nonlinear and ill-posed, thus presenting challenges in the development of efficient inversion algorithms. A further complication is that anisotropic materials cannot be uniquely determined from given scattering data. In the first edition of Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues, the authors discussed methods for determining the support of inhomogeneous media from measured far field data and the role of transmission eigenvalue problems in the mathematical development of these methods. In this second edition, three new chapters describe recent developments in inverse scattering theory. In particular, the authors explore the use of modified background media in the nondestructive testing of materials and methods for determining the modified transmission eigenvalues that arise in such applications from measured far field data. They also examine nonscattering wave numbers-a subset of transmission eigenvalues-using techniques taken from the theory of free boundary value problems for elliptic partial differential equations and discuss the dualism of scattering poles and transmission eigenvalues that has led to new methods for the numerical computation of scattering poles. This book will be of interest to research mathematicians and engineers and physicists working on problems in target identification. It will also be useful to advanced graduate students in many areas of applied mathematics.

This book presents the foundations of a general theory of algebras. Often called ``universal algebra'', this theory provides a common framework for all algebraic systems, including groups, rings, modules, fields, and lattices. Each chapter is replete with useful illustrations and exercises that solidify the reader's understanding. The book begins by developing the main concepts and working tools of algebras and lattices, and continues with examples of classical algebraic systems like groups, semigroups, monoids, and categories. The essence of the book lies in Chapter 4, which provides not only basic concepts and results of general algebra, but also the perspectives and intuitions shared by practitioners of the field. The book finishes with a study of possible uniqueness of factorizations of an algebra into a direct product of directly indecomposable algebras. There is enough material in this text for a two semester course sequence, but a one semester course could also focus primarily on Chapter 4, with additional topics selected from throughout the text.

- Conway Morris, S. (Simon), author.
- West Conshohocken, PA : Templeton Press, [2022]
- Description
- Book — xi, 409 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"In this learned romp of science writing, Cambridge professor Simon Conway Morris cheerfully challenges six assumptions--what he calls 'myths'--that too often pass as unquestioned truths amongst the evolutionary orthodox. His convivial tour begins with the idea that evolution is boundless in the kinds of biological systems it can produce. Not true, he says. The process is highly circumscribed and delimited. Nor is it random. This popular notion holds that evolution proceeds blindly, with no endgame. But Conway Morris suggests otherwise, pointing to evidence that the processes of evolution are "seeded with inevitabilities." If that is so, then what about mass extinctions? Don't they steer the development of life in radically new directions? Rather the reverse, claims Conway Morris. Such cataclysms simply accelerate evolutionary developments that were going to happen anyway. And what about that other evolutionary canard: the "missing link"? Plenty to choose from in the fossil record but what is persistently over-looked is that in any group there is not one but a phalanx of "missing links". Once again we under-score the near-inevitability of evolutionary outcomes. Turning from fossils to minds, Conway Morris critically examines the popular tenet that the intelligences of humans and animals basically are the same thing, a difference of degree not kind. A closer scrutiny of our minds shows that in reality an unbridgeable gulf separates us from even the chimpanzees, so begging questions of consciousness and Mind. Finally, Conway Morris tackles the question of extraterrestrials. Surely, the size and scale of the universe suggest that alien life must exist somewhere beyond Earth and our tiny siloed solar system? After all, evolutionary convergence more than hints that human-like forms are universal. But Dr. Conway Morris has serious doubts. The famous Fermi Paradox ("Where are they?") appears to hold: Alone in the cosmos--and unique, but not quite in the way one might expect." -- from publisher's website

"Award-winning teachers offer practical tips for addressing inequities in the college classroom and for making all students feel welcome and included. In a book written by and for college teachers, Kelly Hogan and Viji Sathy provide tips and advice on how to make all students feel welcome and included. They begin with a framework describing why explicit attention to structure enhances inclusiveness in both course design and interactions with and between students. Inclusive Teaching then provides practical ways to include more voices in a series of contexts: when giving instructions for group work and class activities, holding office hours, communicating with students, and more. The authors finish with an opportunity for the reader to reflect on what evidence to include in a teaching dossier that demonstrates inclusive practices. The work of two highly regarded specialists who have delivered over a hundred workshops on inclusive pedagogy and who contribute frequently to public conversations on the topic, Inclusive Teaching distills state-of-the-art guidance on addressing privilege and implicit bias in the college classroom. It seeks to provide a framework for individuals and communities to ask, Who is being left behind and what can teachers do to add more structure?"-- Provided by publisher

79. Black holes [2021]
- Bloomer, Ed, author.
- Greenwich, London : Royal Museums Greenwich, 2021
- Description
- Book — 119 pages, 8 unnumbered pages of plates : color illustrations ; 18 cm
- Summary
-
Black holes. What even are they? In brief, a black hole is a region of spacetime so curved by gravity that even light cannot escape it. They're peculiar objects - and notoriously difficult to understand - but are actually a fascinating fusion of the simple and the complex. Although the mathematics describing their behaviour is fiendishly difficult, we can explore the subject by starting with basic principles and straightforward thought experiments. Read on to uncover what's inside a black hole, how scientists discovered this amazing phenomena, even what to do if you find yourself falling into one... and since no one is likely to turn up and help (you'll find out why), what you need to do to escape! Common myths about black holes are dispelled, there is guidance on how to win several Nobel prizes, and the eventual fate of the entire Universe is revealed (maybe)... A little bit of time travel might also be involved!.

- Summary
-
New York Times bestseller Journey into the universe through the most spectacular sights in astronomy in stereoscopic 3D Welcome to the Universe in 3D takes you on a grand tour of the observable universe, guiding you through the most spectacular sights in the cosmos-in breathtaking 3D. Presenting a rich array of stereoscopic color images, which can be viewed in 3D using a special stereo viewer that folds easily out of the cover of the book, this book reveals your cosmic environment as you have never seen it before. Astronomy is the story of how humankind's perception of the two-dimensional dome of the sky evolved into a far deeper comprehension of an expanding three-dimensional cosmos. This book invites you to take part in this story by exploring the universe in depth, as revealed by cutting-edge astronomical research and observations. You will journey from the Moon through the solar system, out to exoplanets, distant nebulas, and galaxy clusters, until you finally reach the cosmic microwave background radiation (or CMB), the most distant light we can observe. The distances to these celestial wonders range from 1.3 light-seconds to 13.8 billion light-years. Along the way, the authors explain the fascinating features of what you are seeing, including how the 3D images were made using the same technique that early astronomers devised to measure distances to objects in space. The dramatic 3D images in this one-of-a-kind book will astonish you, extending your vision out to the farthest reaches of the universe. You will never look up into the night sky the same way again.

88. The arithmetic of polynomial dynamical pairs [2022]
- Favre, Charles, author.
- Princeton ; Oxford : Princeton University Press, 2022
- Description
- Book — xvii, 232 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
New mathematical research in arithmetic dynamics In The Arithmetic of Polynomial Dynamical Pairs, Charles Favre and Thomas Gauthier present new mathematical research in the field of arithmetic dynamics. Specifically, the authors study one-dimensional algebraic families of pairs given by a polynomial with a marked point. Combining tools from arithmetic geometry and holomorphic dynamics, they prove an "unlikely intersection" statement for such pairs, thereby demonstrating strong rigidity features for them. They further describe one-dimensional families in the moduli space of polynomials containing infinitely many postcritically finite parameters, proving the dynamical Andre-Oort conjecture for curves in this context, originally stated by Baker and DeMarco. This is a reader-friendly invitation to a new and exciting research area that brings together sophisticated tools from many branches of mathematics.

The electrophoresis techniques are used in medicine, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and biology to separate soluble and insoluble proteins, nucleic acids, chromosomes, viruses, as well as lysosomes, mitochondria, ribosomes and other cell organelles, red cells, tissue cells, and parasites. This book provides a view over the old electrophoresis techniques, as well as the recent developments in electrophoresis. Electrophoresis Fundamentals is based on the recent book Electrophoresis: Theory and Practice published in 2020 by De Gruyter. The previous book combines theory and technical applications with troubleshooting and problem solving. While Electrophoresis is intended for specialists, Electrophoresis Fundamentals is a book for laboratory technicians, students, biochemists, general practitioners, and more.

98. Texas natural history in the 21st century [2022]
- Schmidly, David J., 1943- author.
- Lubbock, Texas : Texas Tech University Press, [2022]
- Description
- Book — xxx, 712 pages : illustrations, maps ; 27 cm
- Summary
-
One hundred fifty years ago, Texas was very different. A rural population was spread thinly across the eastern and central parts of the state, and vast lands in the western regions were still undisturbed. Texas's habitats and biota changed dramatically as its population increased and people spread across the landscape. In Texas Natural History: A Century of Change (2002), David Schmidly chronicled the changes that occurred during the twentieth century. In this second edition, Schmidly is joined by colleagues Robert and Lisa Bradley of Texas Tech University to extend that story over the first two decades of the twenty-first century. The focus of Texas Natural History in the 21st Century continues to be on the mammalian fauna of the state, and it includes a reprinting of Vernon Bailey's 1905 "The Biological Survey of Texas" with new annotations and updates. In the rest of the book, the authors discuss changes in landscapes, land use, and the status of Texas mammals in the last hundred years. The authors present current challenges to conserving the natural history of Texas and suggest long-term solutions to those challenges, including actions focused on both private and public lands. As Texas approaches the daunting challenge of conserving its wildlife, Texas Natural History in the 21st Century serves as a rallying cry for addressing the scenarios imperiling Texas's natural history in our present day and in the future.
