In 1994, Zapatista rebels seized land in the Lacandon rain forest in the Mexican state of Chiapas, and founded the Autonomous Municipality of Emiliano Zapata. Since then they have worked collectively, tending an organic vegetable garden and engaging in other works as part of a single communal enterprise.
