Diogo Alvares, is hired by the King's map-maker to illustrate a precious document. The document is subsequently stolen by a French courtesan, and Diogo, is packed off to the New World as a punishment. When the ship carrying him sinks off the Brazilian coast, he manages to swim ashore, where he meets the comely Indian princess, Paraguaçu. Through a series of events, he falls in love, manages to avoid being eaten, and is dubbed Caramuru, Son of Thunder.

Santiago Badariotti Merlo was the butler for the parents and family of director João Moreira Salles for thirty years. He was also an eccentric man, a lover of film, theater, music and history. In 1992, when Santiago has retired, João Moreira Salles decides to make a film about him. He films him, but never edits the movie. In 2005 he returns to work on the unfinished film and discovers reflections of his own life in Santiago's memories.
