The document is subsequently stolen by a French courtesan, and Diogo, is packed off to the New World as a punishment. When the ship carrying him sinks off the Brazilian coast, he manages to swim ashore, where he meets the comely Indian princess, Paraguaçu. Through a series of events, he falls in love, manages to avoid being eaten, and is dubbed Caramuru, Son of Thunder.

In 2005 he returns to work on the unfinished film and discovers reflections of his own life in Santiago's memories.
