Summary:
João Ratão is a Portuguese soldier serving in France during World War I. He corresponds with a young woman named Vitória in emotional love letters, but he has a comrade write them because he is illiterate. At home, he lacks the courage to tell her the truth, and other men are pursuing Vitória as well.
